UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed July 14. 1906. Serial irofszazso.
ers skilledin the art to which it appertains .to
make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hoisting apparatus, and the ob]ect of the invention is to produce a simple and efiicient means whereby heavy articles, such as metallic bath-tubs, etc, may be hoisted and turned over conveniently and lowered right side up.
The invention consists further in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be herein'after fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the acoornpanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
l Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a grooved track, and B, B, designate standards, each of which is hollow and rovided with longitudinal guideways in w 'ch the bearing blocks D have vertical play. The upper end of each standard is flaring, as at B, and works in a groove in an inverted track B A' projection D of each bearing block works in an elongated slot B in each standard. E designates a shaft, preferably square in cross section, and the spindle ends of said shaft are journaled in said bearing blocks. F, F designate chains, each being secured to one of said blocks and passing over a sheave G journaled at the upper end of Y the standard, thence passing over a drum H journaled in brackets I near the lower ends of said standards, and. crank arms are fixed to the spindle ends of the shafts upon which said drums are mounted, whereby the chains may be wound upon or unwound from the drums, and dogs J are pivotallymounted upon said brackets and adapted to engage the teeth of ratchet wheels rotating with the and O designates a threaded shaft passing through registering apertures in corresponding ends of said platesand nuts 0 are mounted on the ends of said shaft and are adapted to bear against the outer faces of semi plates, whereby the same may beheld in clamping relation against an object, such as a bath tub, designated in the drawings by letter Said plates are forked, as shown clearly in the side view of the drawings, and in each arm R of the forked end of the plates are formed the perforations Q through which the threaded rods S are adapted to pass crosswise of the tub, and upon which the tub or other object being hoisted is adaptedto rest when inverted. Nuts T are fitted upon the threaded ends of the rods S and are adapted to hold said arms against the sides of the object being hoisted.
In order to hold the bearing blocks at any desired elevations, pins W are passed through the registering perforations O of the standards underneath the blocks, and pins L are also passed through the shaft E and adapted to bear against the outer faces of the plates for the purpose of holding the same in adjusted positions upon the shaft.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that by the provision of the apparatus shown and described, a simple and eflicient means is afforded for hoisting heavy weights, such as bath-tubs, etc., and allowing the same to be swung about and lowered right side up or vice versa.
What I claim is 1. A hoisting apparatus comprising standards, wheels journaled at the bottoms of said standards, vertically movable bearing blocks mounted one upon each standard, a shaft journaled in said blocks, plates held upon said shaft, and means for clamping the object to be hoisted intermediate said plates, as set forth.
2. A hoisting apparatus comprising standards, wheels journaled at the bottoms of said standards, vertically movable bearing blocks mounted one upon each standard, a shaft i'ournaled in said blocks, plates having anguar-outlined apertures adapted to receive said shaft and turn therewith, threaded rods passing through registering apertures in said plates, and nuts mounted upon the threaded portions of said rods and adapted to bear IOO IIO
against the outer faces of the plates, whereby the latter may be held against the sides of the object being hoisted, said rods at one end of the plates serving to support the object being raised, as set forth.
3. A hoisting apparatus comprising standards, wheels journaled at the bottoms of said. standards, vertically movable bearing blocks mounted one upon each standard, a shaft {ournaled in said blocks, plates having anguar-outlined apertures to receive said shaft upon which they are mounted, pins passing through the shaft and adapted to hold the plates adjacent to an object intermediate the same to be hoisted, threaded rods passing through arms of the plates and upon which thevobject being raised is adapted to rest, nuts upon said rods, means for holding the bearing blocks elevated, hoisting chains con- 20 nected to said blocks and passing over suitable sheaves, and drums upon which the chains are adapted to wind, as set forth.
4-. In combination with the standards, wheels journaled at the lower ends thereof, a grooved track in which said Wheels travel, an inverted grooved track at the upper ends of the standards, flaring blocks at the upper ends of said standards and adapted to travel in said inverted track, bearing blocks carried in grooved ways in said standards, a shaft j ournaled in said blocks, plates mounted upon said shaft and adapted to be clamped against the object to be raised, and means for raising and. lowering said blocks, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the resence of two witnesses.
