PUNCHING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed January 28, 1907. Serial No. 353.603.
To all whom it 71mg concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN IVILLIAM SPENA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVakeeney, in the county of Trego and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Punching Implement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in punching implements, having for an object, among others, the provision of a strong, powerful, hand-operated punch for punching holes in sheet metal and othermaterials. The punching or cutting tool is mounted in the implement in a manner to at all times remain normal to the work during the punching operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool complete; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly in longitudinal section showing the position of the punch preparatory to punching the hole in a piece of sheet metal; Fig. 3 is a like view showing the position of the parts after the punching operation is completed, and Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In carrying out my invention, I employ two hand- levers 1 and 2, respectively, which are connected together at their forward ends through the intermediary of links 3, a link being arranged at each side of the tool and pivoted at opposite ends to the respective levers, by pins or rivets 4;. The lever 1 at its forward end is in the shape of a rectangular block, which is formed by providing this end of the lever with a thickened portion 5 on its under face, making this part of the construction very strong and capable of withstanding severe strain. A horizontal slot 6 is formed in the end of the lever 1 in the thickened portion 5 and centrally divides said portion into two opposed jaws or plates 7 and 8.
The lever 2 at its outer end is flattened and formed substantially the width of this portion of the lever 1, and is provided with a recess 9 in its upper face, in which is pivotally mounted ona pin 10, a punching tool 11. This tool, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, has a reduced upper end formed with a bevel cutting edge, which adapts the tool to be readily forced through the material desired to be punched.
The tool 11 passes through an alining opening in the plate 8, said opening being oi sirflicient diameter, as also the recess 9, to allow the tool a limited, pivotal movement as the levers land 2 are swung to and from. each other on the links 3.
In alinement with the tool 11, when the hand-levers are drawn together, is an apertured punching-block 12, said block having cars 13 extending at opposite sides beyond the sides of the plate 7. A cross piece 14 is arranged 011 the top face of the plate 7 and is attached to the cars 13 at each side of said plate, by bolts 15, said bolts acting to securely clamp the block 12 in adjusted position. The aperture or opening in the block 12, when said block is in position, also alines with a similar opening or aperture in the plate 7 and cross piece 14, thus providing for the reception of the punchings of the punching tool and of their discharge therefrom. This aperture or opening in the plate 7 may be slightly enlarged or elongated, if desired, in order that the plate may not blanket the aperture in the die-block and cross-piece 14 should the die-block be adjusted on the plate to bring it in exact axial alinement with the tool 11.
In the operation of the implement, the levers 1 and 2 are separated until the tool 11 is withdrawn below the face of the plate 8. The metal or other material is then inserted in the slot 6, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. On now pressing the levers together with the tool resting against the upper edge of the recess 9, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be properly located to pass into the block 12 when forced through the metal or other material. This is accomplished by bringing sufficient pressure to bear on the lovers 1 and 2, as is usual in devices of this character llaving thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An implement of the character described, comprising two hand-levers each having a flattened outer end, the flattened outer end of one of said levers being thickened and provided with a slot centrally entering the end thereof and forming two 0pposed plates, links pivotally connecting one of said plates with the other lover, a punchin tool pivotally mounted in a recess in said i other lever adapted to pass through an opendie-block coacting with said punching tool removably attached to the opposite plate.
2. An implement of the character described, comprising two levers having outer flattened ends, means movably connecting said outer ends of the levers together, the outer end of one of said levers being provided with a slot entering the end thereof and forming two opposed plates, a punch carried by the other lever passing through an opening in one of said plates, a die-block coacting with said punch having ears extending at the opposite sides thereof, a cross piece, and means connecting the ears of said die-block to the cross piece, acting to clamp them to the opposite plate.
3. An implement of the character demg in the adjacent plate, and an apertured l scribed, comprising two hand levers one of which is provided with a slot entering the end thereof and forming two opposed plates, a link pivotally connecting one of said plates with the other lever, a punching tool pivot ally mounted on said other lever adapted to pass through an opening in the adjacent plate, and a die block co-acting with said punching tool carried by and laterally adjustable on the opposite plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the two subscribing witnesses.
