Be it known that I, ERNST A. G. BIER- wiRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improvement over the box illustrated in United States Letters Patent No. 744,284, granted to me November 17, 1903, and contains means for reinforcing the box so that it will sustain additional weight without materially increasing the cost of production:

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 represents an inverted perspective view of my improved box. Fig. 2 1s a reduced detail perspective view of the strip for forming the side and end walls of the box. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line III III of Fig. 1 with the box occupying its normal position.

In said drawings, 1 designates a rectangular bottom portion provided with a pair of marginal flanges 2 extending almost the entire length of its longitudinal sides.

3 designates a strip divided by four pairs of equally-spaced vertical creases 4.

5 designates slots arranged in the lower portion of the strip between the creases 4.

6 designates a pair of slots arranged in one end of the strip for the reception of a pair of tongues 7 integral -with the opposite end of said strip.

8 designates two semicircular tonguesarranged in the lower portion of the strip.

All of the above elements are embodied in my patent above referred to, the present improvement residing in a fiange 9, formed by folding the lower ortion of strip 3 upon itself, as clearly s own in Figs. 2 and 3. Said flange is severed between creases 4 by four slots 10, as shown in Fig. 1, and its upper edge is arranged in alnement with the lower edges of slots 5, as shown in Fig. 2.

In assembling the box, Hanges 2 are turned upwardly at right angles to bottom portion 1 and retained in this position by tongues 8, when strip 3 is placed in position. In placing said strip around the bottom portion it is bent at creases 4 into octagonal form, so that the corners of bottom portion 1 will extend through slots5. This brings the upper edge of fiange 9 into contact with the under side of bottom portion 1, so that the latter will be sustained throughout the length of the side and end walls by said iiange. The strip is then locked by inserting tongues 7 in slots 6.

The corners of the bottom portion, in addition to being supported by extending through slots 5, will be sustained by the inwardly-extending portions 9a of the Range, as shown in Fig. 1. 9aL of the flange are formed at the slits 10 When strip 3 is bent around bottom portion 1, and, in addition to providing a broad bearing-surface for said bottom portion, prevents the flange from becoming crimped or otherwise damaged when bent at the creases 4. By providing fiange 9 the stability of the box is greatly increased at small cost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A box consisting of a rectangular bottom, a surrounding wall having slots near its lower edge through which the corners of said bottom project, means for connecting said wall with the longer edges of said bottom, and an upturned flange integral with the lower edge of the wall and abutting at its upper edge against said bottom, said liange being severed from the wall at the corners of the box and bent inward beneath said bottom.

2. A box consisting of a rectangular bottom, a surrounding octagonal wall having four pairs of spaced upright creases and four horizontal slots near its lower edge each connecting the creases of one pair, the corners of the bottom projecting through said slots, and an upturned flange integral with the lower edge of the wall but severed therefrom on lines parallel with said slots, the upper edge of said iiange abutting against said bottom and its oblique corners being bent inward beneath said bottom.
