GATE-OPENER.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR T. Monnrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elburn, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for opening and closing sliding doors or gates, the principal features being a lever which engages a tilting or rocking bar having a cam and provided with a swinging arm which operates the door. In connection with this is a latch of novel construction and means to operate the same when the door is opened.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the door in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the door open. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the latch. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rocker.
In the drawings, refers to a. door (or it may be a gate) which is of any usual form of construction. 11 are hangers having wheels 1]., which are mounted on a rail 12 and suspend the door.
13 is the framing surrounding the door.
14 is a cross-beam above the door, and attached thereto, by means of hangers 14 is a rockshaft 15, having at its ends two parallel arms 15, extending therefrom at a right angle, one at each. side of the door. This shaft and its arms form a pivoted or tilting U- shaped frame, which is conveniently made of gas-pipe. Attached to the outer ends of the arms 15 are pull-handles 15 for operating the same. The shaft 15 also has an arm 16, projecting oppositely to the arms 15 and has a connecting-bar l7, whichengages and operates a rocking lever 18. The connecting-bar 17 has at its lower end two branches 17, between which is mounted a roller 17*, and this rides on the upper edge of the rocker The lower ends of the branches 17 a have a cross rod or bolt 17 ,.which is adapted to engage under the cam-shaped lower edge 18 of the rocker 18. This cam is convex or rounding at the middle, as at 18", and concave at each end, as at 18.
The rocker 18 has secured thereto a T-shaped part 18 with an upwardly-extending arm 18 the two parts 18 and 18*"being connected by crossbolts 18 which also serve to confine the swing of the bar 17. The rocker is pivoted at 20 to a bracket 20. The arm 18 projects within and engages at Specification of Letters Patent.

22 is a crank which is pivoted in a'plate 22 secured to the door, and the crank projects from or is attached to one end of'a long arm 23, having a latch or hook 23 at its other end which engages a catch 23* on the door-frame.
24 is a handle pivoted'on. the door and having alever 2 1 for raising the latch. This is used supplementary to the other operating devices.
25 is a treadle-crank, which may also be used for operating the door-moving device, a chain 25 being connected therefrom to one of the handles 15 In operation when either handle 15 is pulled the lever connections cause the rod 17 to pull up the lower end of the rocker, thereby swinging the arm 18 and throwing the door one way or the other, the bolt 17.fengaging in the concavity 18 of the rocker. After the rocker is thrown and the handle let go the roller 17 travels down the inclined upper edge of the rocker and carries the bar 17 to the opposite end of the rocker ready for the next or reverse operation. When the arm 18 swings, (to open the door,) it first strikes the crank 22 and turns the same slightly, causing the arm 23 to lift and disengage the latch. The axle of the roller 17 works in longitudinal slots 17 d in the branches of the bar 17, so that said roller may follow down the inclined edge of the rocker as the bar swings.
I claim- 1. An opener for sliding doors or gates, comprising a pivoted rocker having-depressions in its lower edge on opposite sides of the pivot, and a projecting arm connected to the door or gate, a lever, and a swinging bar connected at its upper end to the lever and having a projection at its lower end extending under. the rocker, in position to engage in the depressions.
2. An opener for sliding doors or gates, comprising a pivoted rocker having a projecting arm connected to the door or gate, a lever, a bar connected at its upper end to the lever and. having means at the lower end to engage and turn the rocker when. lifted, and a roller carried by the bar and resting on the rocker and arranged to roll from the high end of the rocker to the low end and swing the bar accordingly.

3. An opener for sliding doors or gates, comprising a pivoted T-lever the main arm of which is connected to the door, a spaced rocking bar having bolts connecting its ends to the two side arms of the lever, the lower edge of the bar having depressions at opposite ends, an operating-lever, a lifting-bar connected at its upper end to the operatinglever and looped at its lower end over the said rocking bar, one of the branches of the loop being confined in the space between the said bolts, and a roller carried in slotted bearings in said branches and resting upon the upper edge or the said rocking bar.
4. The combination with a sliding door or gate, of a rock-shaft extending crosswise above the door and having at o posite ends laterally-extending arms provi ed with depending handles, and also having an oppositely-projecting arm, a bar connected to the latter arm and-depending therefrom beside the door, a rocker connected to the bar and adapted to be turned when said bar is liited, and an arm projecting from the rocker and connected to the door, to slide the same.
