Description
No 850,702 PATENTED APRQ16, 1907 A. WEIMAR.
WOVEN TAPE 0R BAND.
APPLIQATION FILED MAY 23, 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW WEIMAR, OF OHELTENHAM, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM WEIMAR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WOVEN TAPE OR BAND- Patented April 16, 1907.
Application filed May 23, 1906- Serial No- 318,390.
To 00 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW WEIMAR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Woven Tapes or Bands, of which the following is a specificatlon- '1 5:" (at:
The object of my invention is to produce a woven band or tape having a closely-woven center and an ornamental edge with less we penditure of weft-thread than is usually required in the production of such a tape or band. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents, on an exaggerated, scale apiece of tape or band made in accordance with my invention and illustrates also the method of weaving the same.
The tape or band shown in the drawing comprises a central strip 1 and opposite edge strips 2, separated some distance from the central strip, but connected thereto by means of the transverse weft-thread 3 which is interwoven both with the warp-threads of the central strip and with those of the edge strips, the separation of the latter from the centralv strip being effected by interposing between the two sets of warp-threads during the weaving operation longitudinal bars or templets 4, which are shedded, so as to cause the weft-thread 3 to pass alternately under and over each bar, as shown, the web finally leaving the bars as it is drawn forward by the take-up devices of the loom.
In tapes or bands of this character as heretofore made the central strip 1 has been produced by interweaving the weft-thread 3 with warp-threads in a regular weavethat is to say, one-half of the warp-threads have been raised, while the alternate threads were depressed to form the shed for the insertion of the weft-thread, and in order to effect the desired separation of the weft-thread shots where they pass from the central strip to the selvage strips it has been necessary to interweave the weft-thread with the warpthreads of the central band along for two or more shots between the successive interweavings of the weft-thread with the warpthreads of the selvage strips.
In carrying out my invention I avoid the loss of time, labor, and material due to such interweaving of the weft-thread with the warp-threads of the central strip alone by adopting a cross-weave for the series of pairs of warp-threads 7 contained in said central strip, these warp-threads being shedded in the same way as the warp-threads 6, which form the selvage strips. The twisting of the warp-threads 7 between the successive shots of weft-thread serves to effect the desired separation of the latter.
The use of the pairs of cross-warps alone, however, imparts to the central strip 1 an open or lace-like appearance, and when it is desired to produce in said strip a close web I alternate with the pairs of cross-warps 7 pairs of regularly-shedded warps 8, which thus serve to fill the spaces between the pairs of cross-warps and close the texture of the central strip.
I claim 1. A woven tape or band comprising a central strip and opposite selvage strips and a weft-thread interwoven with the warpthreads comprised in each of said strips, said warp-threads being twisted between successive shots of the weft-thread to effect separation of the same.
2. A woven tape or band consisting of a strip comprising a series of pairs of crosswoven warp-threads alternating with pairs of evenly-shedded warp-threads, and a weftthread interwoven with the warp-threads of said strip and forming loops projecting beyond the edges of the same, the successive shots of the weft-thread being separated from each other by the twisting between them of the cross-woven warpthreads.
3. A woventape or band having a central strip and selvage strips spaced apart therefrom, each strip having pairs of cross-woven warp-threads, and the central strip having alternating pairs of evenly-shedded warpthreads, and a weft-thread interwoven with the warp-threads of both the central strip and the selvage strips, the successive shots of said weft-thread being separated from each other by the twisting of the crosswoven Warp-threads between them.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW WEIMAR.
