Be it known that I, LACY M. Nonwoon, a citizen of the United States, residing atthe city of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Knapsack, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in knapsacks, and more particularly to a combined knapsack and vest, by means of which a heavy weight or load may be easily and comfortably carried upon the shoulders.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple and inexpensive construction, adjustable to lit different persons and for receiving different sized loads, and exceedingly well adapted for the purposes intended.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel feal tures of construction, combination, and ar- Iof the vest open.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knapsac'k, showing the same in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the outer section Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view.

In the practice of my invention I construct the knapsack proper, 1, as a part of a double vest consisting of inner and outer sections 2 3-that is to say, l use the inner and outer vertical side walls 4 5 of the knapsack as the backs of the inner and outer vest. These walls 4 5 are connected by a bottom 6 and to ends 7 8, so that the knapsack 1 is of substantially rectangular form. lts open upper end is adapted to be closed by a top 9, attached to the upper end of the inner vest-back 4 and having buttonholes 1() around its edges to engage buttons 11 around the upper edge of the walls 7, 5, and 8 of the linapsack. Instead of these buttons and buttonholes any other suitable fastening means may be employed.

If desired, one or more partitions 13 may be arranged in the knapsack to divide it into separate compartments.

The inner vest 2 is adapted to have its two front side sections 14 15 overlap each other and adjustably connected to iit persons of different sizes. While any suitable adjust- V14 a vertical series of buttons 16, which may be engaged with. transverse and vertical rows of buttonholes 17, formed in the overlapping edge of the section 15. These sections 14 15 may also be adjusted by straps 18 attached to themv adjacent to their front and rear edges and adjustably connected by a buckle 1.9 or any other suitable adjustable fastening.

The outer vest 3 has two similar sections 2O 21, which are adapted to overlap each other at the front and which may be adjustably connected, as by buttons 22 and series of buttonholes 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The upper portions of the sections 20 21 may be adjustably connected to the upper portions of the sections 14 15, so as to support the upper and outer portion of the knapsack. This adjustable connection is preferably effected by providing buttons 24 upon the sec- 7 5 tions 14 15 for engagement by buttonholes 25, provided in the sections 20 21. The lower portions of the sections 20 21 may be further connected to the lower portions of the sections 14 15 by buttons 27,-provided upon the sections 14 15 and adapted to be engaged by buttonholes 28, provided. upon. the sections 20 21.

Secured adjacent to the top and bottom edges of the outer wall 5 of the knapsackbody are straps 29, which are adjustably connected by buckles 30 or similar fastening devices.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the weight of the load in the knapsacl 1 will be equally distributed over the shoulders and back of the person wearing the same, so that` avery heavy weight may be conveniently and easily carried. The various adjustments permit it to be properly Yfitted upon the person and adjusted for supporting the load in the most comfortable manner possible.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

5. A device of the character described comprising inner and outer vests having their backs spaced by bottom and end walls to provide a knapsack-body, means for adjustabiy connecting the Jfront side sections of the inner vest, means for adjustabiy connecting the Jr'ront side sections of the outer vest, and means for connecting the front side sections of the outer vest to the front side sections of the inner vest.
