THOMAS J.
W. PORTER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LettcrsPatent No. 85,850, dated January 12, 1869.
mnovmmnr m BENCH-PIN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it ma/y comm.-
Be it known that I, Tnoms J. W. PORTER, of Grand Rapids, in the-county of Kent, and State of Michigan,- have invented a new and useful Improve ment in a Bench-Pin for carpenters .use;' and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The object of this invention is so to construct a pin for the side of a carpenters bench, to hold up the end of the board, the opposite end of which is confined by the vice, as that said pin will-be adjustable to any thickness of work.
The invention consists of a cylinder, A, provided at one end with a suitable crank, B, and two or more segmental-screw threads 0, by meansof which it is firmly held in the side of the bench. At the opposite end of this cylinder, from that occupied by the crank,
I cut a female screw, D, uponthe inner side of said cylinder, which engages with the corresponding thread upon the pin or bolt E, which is screwed within said cylinder, and provided with a suitable flange or'head,
F,."for the purpose of pressing against the board resting upon the pin, and assisting to hold said board in place.
The usual pin-holes may be made in the side board or rail of the bench, of sufiicient size to receive the cylinder, and said holes should be made slightly oblong, horizontally. Insert the end of the cylinder into one of said holes, with the crank in a horizontal position, projecting to the right, and when the segmentalscrew threads have entered the hole, then turn the crank down and around until the cylinder is properly secured in the hole. The pin may be then adjusted to any desired thickness of work.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cylinder A, piovided with segmental-screw threads 0, female-screw thread D, and crank ,B, in combination with pin E, having a head, F, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS J. W. PORTER. Witnesses: I
OMAR H. Snuonns, EDWARD TAGGART.
