UNITED STATES B OTTLE-LOGK.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed October 1,1906. Serial No- 336,905-
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. S. DE MARS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New "York, in the county of New York and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an im-v proved construction of bottle lock or cork retainer adapted to securely hold a cork within the mouth of a bottle so as to prevent its surreptitious removal and access to the contents of the bottle, the invention providing means whereby my invention may be applied to bottles within a wide range of varying sizes, the efficiency of the device being thereby increased.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied to'a bottle; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the cork retaining strip; and, Fig. 3 is a similar view of the three parts, which, together combine to produce the neck-encircling band, said band being adjustable, as
will be hereinafter described. Fig.4 is a top plan view of the neck-encircling band.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a portion of the body of a bottle, 2 the neck thereof and 3 the rim bead.
My improved bottle lock or cork retainer embodies a preferably metallic strip 4 sufiiciently stiff for the purpose, said strip consisting of a preferably flat intermediate portion adapted to engage with the upper surface of the cork in the mouth of the bottle, a grooved extremity 6 which is preferably corrugated as shown, and an angularly disposed and downwardly extending opposite extremity 6, which is provided with a plurality of transverse slits 7 one above the other as shown.
8 designates a band or collar which is adapted to encircle the neck of a bottle underneath the rim bead thereof and said band is provided along its length and preferably at its middle with an upwardy projecting lug 9 formed with a slot 10 which is adapted to receive the grooved or corrugated extremity 6 of the cork retainer 4. The ends 11 of the band 8 are adapted to be inserted through any one of the slits 7 in the opposite extremity of the cork retainer 4 and said ends are preferably provided with holes 12 in their projecting ends, said holes being adapted for the reception of a pad-lock, or the like, as illustrated.
In the practical operation of my improved pad-lock, the band is placed around the neck of a bottle underneath the rim bead of said neck and the cork retainer band 4 is then placed over the top of the cork and intight engagement therewith, the grooved or corrugated extremity 6 of-said cork retaining strip being inserted through the slot 9 and engaged with the walls of the slot according to the. thickness of the cork and the bottle neck. The ends 11 of the band 8 are then twisted and inserted through the proper slit in the opposite extremity of the cork retainingband and locked therein as above described.
As illustrated best in Fig. 3, the neck-encircling band 8 is constructed in a plurality of sections adjustably connected together. The rearmost or intermediate section, designated 13 is formed with the apertured lug 9 and is provided at its ends with slots 14 through which the end sections 15 extend, said end sections being formed at one extremity with retaining lugs 16 adapted to limit the extensible movement of the end section with respect to the intermediate section. By constructing the band 8 in this manner, it is obvious that the one band may be used for bottle necks of varying diameters. The three sections may be adjusted with respect to each other to produce a band of the requisite length to properly encircle the bottle neck, and the end sections 15 are of such pliable metal that their ends may be twisted, as indicated at 11, so as to be properly inserted, as illustrated in Fig. 1, through one'of the slots 9 in the cork retaining strip 4. The ends of the twisted portions will manifestly prevent, the end sections 15 from being drawn outwardly through the slot 7 and the cork retaining strip 4 is of such stiff metal as to resist bending so that the downwardly extending portion 6 may not be bent outwardly to loosen the end sections 15 with Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle lock, comprising a cork retaining strip consisting of an intermediate portion adapted to rest upon the top of a cork in a bottle, one end of said strip being grooved and the opposite end angularly disposed and provided with one or more slits, and a band adapted to encircle the neck of a bottle, said band being provided with ends adapted to be inserted through the said slit and locked therein, the said band also provided with a slot adapted to receive the grooved end of the cork retaining strip.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described bottle lock, comprising a band adapted to encircle the neck of a bottle and provided at a point intermediate of its length with an oflfstanding lug formed with a slot, and a cork retaining strip embodying an intermediate portion adapted to rest on the top of a cork, one end of said strip being provided with grooves and adapted for insertion through the slot of said band, and the other end of said strip being singularly disposed and projecting downwardly and provided with a series of lateral s'lits adapted to receive the ends of said band.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described bottle lock, comprising a neck-encircling band constructed in a plurality of sections extensible with respect to each other, one of said sections being provided with an offstanding lug formed with a slot, and a cork retaining strip embodying an intermediate portion adapted to rest upon the top of the cork, one end of said strip be ing provided with grooves, and adapted for insertion through the lug of the band, and the other end of said strip being angularly disposed and projecting downwardly and provided with a slot adapted to receive the extremities of the ends of said bands.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described bottle lock, comprising a cork retaining strip embodying an intermediate portion adapted to rest on top of the cork, one extremity of said strip being provided with grooves, and the other extremity of the strip being angularly disposed and formed with a transversely extending slit, and a neck-encircling band constructed of an intermediate section provided with an oifstanding lug formed with a slot through which the grooved extremity of the cork retaining strip is adapted to project, and the ends of the said intermediate section being formed with slots, end
sections mounted to slide through the respective slots and provided at one extremity with lugs limiting the sliding movement in one direction, the other extremity of said end sections being adapted for insertion through the slit in the angular-1y disposed extremity of the cork retaining strip.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle lock comprising a cork retaining strip consisting of an intermediate portion adapted to rest upon the cork of the bottle, one end of the strip being grooved and the opposite end angularly disposed, and a band adapted to encircle the neck oi the bottle, said band being provided with a slot adapted to receive the grooved end of the cork retaining strip, and the other end of said cork retaining strip and the ends of the band being arranged for interlocking connection.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
