Description

v J.L.HAVEN. GRINDSTONE JOURNAL BOX.
N0. 85,819. Patented Jan, 12,1869.
smegma-i (Emu JAMES L. HAVEN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO; Letters Patent No. 85,819, dated J actuary 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRINDSTONE-JOURNAL BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES L. 1L1 YEN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Grindstoue-Jourlml Box; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in constructing the boxes or housing for grimlstonc-journals in such a manner as to secure the fi'iction-rollers against displacement, and to protect their bearings from the water and grit which are continually projectml from the stone when it is in operation.
Figure 1 is in perspective view of a grimlstone-journztl box, embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is a transverse section in the line i=2".
Figure 3 is a perspective View, showing a modification of my imprm'enwnt with the cap removed.
Figure 4 is apartially-sectionized plan, showing a modification of the fi'iction-rollers.
The housing or box proper consists of atsinglc casting, A, whose perforated bosses, I, afford journal-hemings for the shafts ccoi' the ti'iction-rollers O O, which journals are cast solidlyto their respective rollers, and permanently, although loosely, within said bostes, so us, while permitting free rotation of said rollers, to make them irrcmova-ble from their housing.
The upper portions of the bosses 1 project beyond the ends oi'the shafts c c sufficiently to Ill-UtQCtillUlll from any dirt, grit, or moisture.
The box A has lugs, l) D, perforated to receive screws G G, which serve to nttuch to the frame, not oniy said box, but 21- cover, B, provided with similar lugs, E E, and which are likewise traversed by the screws G G. I
The box A and the cover B serve in conjunction to protect the rollers from sand, water, and other impu rifles.-
It will be seen that this journalebox, with its pair of rollers complete, is composed of four simple and easily-moulded castings.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of my improvement, in which the box proper is composed of two costings, A -'A, held together by means of flanges, bl), fig. 2, on the top, or by mezms of bolts or rivets, which extend through the holes a It in fig. 3,"thus composing the sides of the box.
In fig. 4 still another modification is seen, in which the rollcrsrot-ate upon fixedaxles, which are riveted to the box, thus answering the purposes of the bolts or rivets required in fig. 3, or the flanges required on the cover, as in fig. 2. v
1 claim herein as new, and of my invention- .1. The box or housing A A, cast in two pieces and connected together byrivets or other means, as represented in the'drziwings, figs. 1, 2, 3, 4.
2. The grimlstone-journztl box, composed of the box A and the cover B, united in the manner set forth, and. containing the rollers O O permanently fixed therein, as descrioe'd.
In testimony of which invention. I hereunto set my hand.
JAMES L. HAVEN. Witnesses:

JAMES H. LAYMAN.
