Be it known that I, FRANK C. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a condenser for condensing steam and other vapors and particularly to that type of condenser wherein the steam to be condensed is brought. into actual contact with the water for condensation and the air and vapor liberated drawn away from the condensing chamber by an air pump.
. It is well known that other Conditions being equal the quantity of water required for condensing varies with the quantity of steam or vapor to be condensed. Among the various designs of condensers are several wherein the main volume of water for condensation is admitted to and distributed in the main condensing chamber by means of a cone placed in the mouth of the water discharge opening. These cones are of various designs, aregenerally suspended from above and located horizontally concentric with the water discharge opening. In order to distribute the water in the main condensing chamber it isevident that the water must be discharged over the cone and into said chamber at a velocity not less than. that required for a proper distribution. As a result the support for the cone is so arranged that the cone may be raised or lowered and thus the area of outlet for water over the cone decreased or increased as less or more water is delivered. Various devices are used for raising and lowering the cone; one common arrangement is to have the -upper end of the rod supporting the cone furnished with a screw traveling in a fixed nut whereby the turning of a wheel attached to the rod raises or lowers the cone as desired. Another form is to suspend the rod carrying the cone on a spring whereby as more water is delivered the bell is lowered and the water outlet opening increased by compressing the spring.
The objects of my invention are to provide a condenser in which it is not necessary to vary the position of the water distributing cone in order to provide for the distribution of varying quantities of water; to provide efficient means for cooling the air and vapor indicated by line XY of Fig. 1.

It is also manifest that saidopening can be adjusted so that for the minimum quantity of water re-' quired by a particular condenser, the necessary" head to secure the desired distribution over L can be fixed experimentally at the minimum elevation in G, it being only necessary that a solid body of water be maintained above said opening. Having adjusted said opening to suit the minimum quantity of water to be supplied, it is evident that the maximum quantity of water required can be delivered through said opening provided the height or head of water above said opening is increased by the required amount. By reference to the drawings it is evident that the head of water may be in creased until the water reaches a level near the upper edge of j of the inner wall of J and thus the requirement of the necessary head for the maximum quantity of water is fulfilled. It must be borne in mind that the vertical distance between it. and j may be made to suit requirements. The purpose of the screw Z, the nut Z and the handewheel Z4 is to provide means whereby the cone L may be adjusted to suit requirements and also that it may be lowered in case of an obstruction being caught and held in the opening between it and L.
If for any reason a quantity of water greater. than the maximum quantity required for condensing purposes is delivered into pipe G, the latter being supported as before by partition F extending across the v 1 steam to be condensed enters by B.

The operation of'the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 is as followsr-Watr is delivered to B through C from whence it overfiows'the edge r into G and thence over Land downward as described in connection with Fig. 1. Some water passes through the openings 1" in the bottom of R and downward to the upper surface of F where it accumulates until it overflows 8 through S into the lower part of the condenser. As in the case of Fig. The air and vapor is drawn upward through the falling water below F, through openings S,
to the air pump through D. It is evident that the pipe G of Fig. 3 may be made of such height as to furnish the heads necessary to enable the opening between it and L to be the same for the maximum and minimum quantity of water as explained in detail in sult will follow in case the opening between it and L becomes clogged or restricted.
It is evident that openings 1' may be omitted in which case under ordinary conditions of working no water would pass downward through openings S, these openings servingonly for the purpose of allowingv the air and vapor to pass from the lower to the upper chamber. In case of the water overflowing g these openings S would also serve to conduct the excess water from the upper to the lower chambers. It is also evident that two or more openings may be substituted. in each case for B, C;, D, and- E and that the number of K and S may be varied.
I do not limit my construction to the use of a cone L of any particular form any ap proved design may be used.
Having described my invention, what I claim. and desire to cover by Letters Patent are- 1. In a condenser, the combination of a condensing vessel, a partition dividing said vessel into an upper and ,a lower chamber, one or more steam or vapor inlet connect-ions leading to the lower chamber, one ormere water outlet connections leading from the lower chamber, one or more water inlet connections leading to the upper chamber, one or more air outlet connections leading from the upper chamber, a centrally located wateropening in said partition for the pas sage of water from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, one or more openings located around said water opening and in said partition, providing communication for the passage of air and vapor from the lower to the upper chamber, a cone located concentrically in said water opening, means within the upper chamber whereby the height of water above said opening will increase or decrease according as the quantity of water to be discharged through sa1d water opening 1s 1ncreased or decreased and means for raising and lowering said cone.

3. In a condenser, the combination of a condensing vessel, a partition dividing said vessel into an upper and a lower chamber, one or more steam or vapor inlet connections leading to the lower chamber, one or more water outlet connections leading from the lower chamber, one or more water inlet connections leading to the upper chamber, one or more air outlet connections leading from the upper chamber, a centrally located water opening in said partition for the passage of water from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, one or more annular compartments in said upper chamber open at the top, one or more tubes open to said annular compartments and providing communication between said annular compartment or compartments and said lower chamber, a cone located concentrically in said water opening, means Within the upper chamber whereby the height of'water above said water opening will increase or decrease according as the quantity of water to be discharged through said water opening is increased or decreased and means for raising and lowering said cone.
4. In a condenser, the combination of a condensing vessel, a partition dividing said vessel into an upper and a lower chamber, one or more steam or vapor inlet connections leading to the lower chamber, one or more water outlet connections leadingv from the lower chamber, one or more water inlet connections leading to the upper chamber, one or more air outlet connections leading from the upper chamber, a centrally located water opening in said partition for the passage of water from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, one or more openings located around said water opening and in said partition providing communication for the passage of air and vapor from the lower to the upper chambers, a cone located concentrica y in said water opening, means within the upper chamber whereby the height of water a ove said water opening will increase or decrease according as the quantity of water to be discharged through said water opening is increased or decreased, means for raising and lowering said cone, means within the upper chamber whereby an excess of water over that discharged through said water opening in said partition is caused to pass from the upper to the'lower chamber through said openings in said partition located around said water opening.

In a condenser, the combination of a condensing vessel, a partition dividing said vessel into an upper and a lower chamber, one or more steam or vapor inlet connections leading to the lower chamber, one or more water outlet connections leading from the lower chamber, one or more water inlet connections leading to the upper chamber, one or more air outlet connections leading from the upper chamber, a centrally located water opening in said partition for the passage of water from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, one or more openings located around said water opening and in said partition providing communication for the passage of air and vapor from the lower chamber to the upper chamber and for the passage of water from the upper chamber to the lower chamber, a cone located concentrically in said water opening, means within the u per chamber whereby the height of water a ove said water opening will increase or decrease according as the quantity of Water to be discharged through said wateropening is increased or decreased, means for raising and lowering said cone, means within the upper chamber whereby an excess of water over that discharged through said opening in said partition is caused to pass from'the upper chamber to the lower chamber through said openings in said partition located around said water opening.
