Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed February 7, 1907. Serial No. 356,214.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO G. MAYER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Wiirtemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object a drawing means for adjusting it to a precise line and consists of a set screw the threaded shank of which is conveniently releasably mounted on the fixed blade of the drawing pen, in such a way, that after the release of this threaded shank the movable spring blade of the drawing pen moves far enough away from the fixed blade to admit of the drawing pen being easily cleaned, and after readjustment of the threaded pin or shank the thickness of line then drawn is again precisely the same as before.
Several forms of construction of such releasable precise adjusting devices, in drawing pens, are shown in Figures 1-12 of the accomp anying drawings In Figs. 1 and 2 an adjusting device is shown in two different views in which the double hook e of the threaded pin 0 is carried through a slot f in the fixed blade a of the drawing pen, then turned through 90and by means of its double hook engages in recesses 'i of the fixed tongue and in this position is pre vented turning. The threaded pin 0 passes through the movable blade 6 of the drawing pen and has a set nut g by means of which the movable spring blade I) may be adjusted relative to the fixed blade a. On the front end of the threaded shank c a head a is formed by means of which the threaded shank 0,-may be turned and brought out of engagement with the fixed blade at, in which position in consequence of the spring action of the blade I), the threaded shank escapes from the fixed blade and the two blades lie so far apart that they may be conveniently cleaned. After the threaded pin has again been inserted in the fixed blade a and its projections engaged behind the latter, the pen describes a line of exactly the same thickness as before.
Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings show on an enlarged scale the setting device according to Flgs. 1 and 2 in two different sections.
In the adjusting device shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in two views turned at 90 to one another, which device is again shown on an enlarged scale in two different sections in Figs. 7 and 8, in place of the head d on the threaded pin 0, a counter-nut d is provided by means of which the nut 9 may be fixed in known manner on the threaded pin 0. By compressing the two blades a and b the double hook e of the threaded pin may also be brought out of engagement'with the recessesf of the blade a, and turned 90, where by the two blades in consequence of the spring action of the one are automatically moved so far apart that they are conveniently accessible for the purposes of cleaning. After the re-insertion of the threaded pin 0 in the fixed blade (1 the pen makes again exactly the same thickness of line as before.
The adjusting device shown in Figs. 9 and 10 in elevation, and in Figs. 11 and 12 in two different sections, on an enlarged scale, substantially coincides with the one shown in,
Figs. 1 and 2, only differing therefrom inasmuch as a single hook e is provided on the threaded pin 0 instead of a double hook e, which single hook on engaging the fixed blade a engages in a recess 72. of the same. The release of the threaded pin from engagement with the blade (1 takes place by turning the pin through 180, or by the pin 0 having so much play in the movable blade Z), that it is not necessary to turn the pin which may be displaced at its point of engagement in the fixed blade a just a suflicient amount to allow its hook e to come out of engagement in the recess h of that tongue.
It is evident that a large number of such adjusting devices may also be arranged which however must all be provided with the principal feature of the invention, viz: the arrangement for releasing the threaded pin a from the fixed blade, in order after the re adjustment of the drawing pen, which has been opened for the purposes of being.
cleaned or the like, to maintain the same width of line as formerly. It may also be observed here that the threaded pin and set nut is also always held in the movable blade even after its release from the engagement with the fixed blade, so that it is not liable to be lost.
I declare that what I claim is z- In a drawing pen, a fixed blade having a slot therein, a movable spring blade, and a releasable mechanism for precisely adjusting IIO said blades as desired, sueh releasable mech- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, 'anism comprising a threaded pin turnably in presence of two witnesses. mounted in the movable spring blade and OTTO G MAYER provided With a set nut and with a hooked 5 end for passing through the slot of the fixed Witnesses:
