No. 849,056.Y
Specification OfLetters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.'
Application led February 6, 1907. Serial No. 356,052.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT CRITsER1 and ROBERT C. WRIGHT, citizens ofthe. United States, residingV atLapel, in the Lcountyvof.n
Madison and State-of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Dumping-l/Vagon, ofi whichr the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dumping=wagons of that type in which the bottom of the wagonbody is made up of movable sections.V
The object `of the invention is to providea wagon-body having 4a sectional` bottomv the members of which canbe readily raised into closed position and firmly supported, so as to prevent displacement thereof.
A still further'objectris to provide simple.
invention consists of .certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter kmore fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
n the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
ln said drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal: sectionvthrough the wagon and showing the bottom -section released or unsupported; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of thewagon-body. Fig. 3 is asection on line x, Fig. 1, and'Fig; 4 is an enlargedlongitudinal sectionthrough a portion of the body and showing the bot-- tom-sections in raised or closed position, said sections being shown by dotted lines in lowered position.
.Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 1 are side beams suitablysupported by the wheels 2 each of these side beams has an inwardly-extending longitudinal flange along its upper.
edge, as shown at 3, said flanges constituting guides.- Studs 4 extend inward from the beams 1, below the flanges 3, and carry friction-rollers 5. l
Connecting the flanges 3 are cross-rods 6, spaced apart at regular intervals, and upon each of these rods are secured hinge-straps 7, riveted or otherwise fastened to the bottomsection 8, preferably formed of sheet metal. The straps 7 extend across the bottom-section and are folded to form inclined faces 9 and bowed seats 10. The inclined portions 9 are disposed adjacent the pivot-rod 6, to whichl the straps are connected, while the of `the wagon, and
seats -10 are interposed betweenthe inclined portions and the bottom-section.A
Slidably. mounted upon-the supportingrollers 5 and 'beneath distances apart equal Ato the distances between thev pivot-rods 6. Lifting-rollers -13 are mountedy on these rods 12 and are adapted when the bottom-sections are raised Yorclosed'to rest beneath and support the bowed seats 10.
A rock-shaft 14 is mounted in hangers 15 depending vfrom the front portions of the beams 1, and arms 16 extend therefrom and are connected to the bars 11 by links 17.
A lever 18 extends. from one end oftheshaft 14 to apoint within convenient reachl off theI driver.
The wagon herein-described is particularlyl designed for holding gravel and the like, and
when the bottom-sections yare raised they,
completely close the body 19 of the wagon. Moreover, it will be noted that when the-sectionsare thus disposed the bowed seats 10 rest upon the supporting-rollers 13, and the weight 'of the contents of the wagon pressesV the sections 8-downward with suflicient force to prevent the rollers 13 and the bars 11 from moving out of adjusted posi-tion. When it is desired to dump the contents of the wagon,- the lever 18 is swung so aste-cause arms 16 to pull forward on the bars 11. The rollers 13 will therefore be pulled out ofthe bowed seats 10 provided for them and under the inclined portions 9 until they finally assume positions below the rods 6. The sections 8 are therefore free to drop by gravity, and theV contents ofthe wagon will be discharged between them. To return the sections 8 to their raised positions, the movement of the lever 18 is reversed, and the rollers forced against the inclined portions 9,- so as to deflect the bottom-sections upward. Said rollers 13 thenpass beneath the bowed'seats 10,.which by reason of their bars 11 from slidingl under ordinary conditions. x
lt will be noted that the flanges 3 not only constitute guides for the bars 11, but they also protect said bars and the rollers 5 from the material discharged between the bottomsections. The apparatus is very simple and durable in construction and can be easily operated either to dump the wagon or to return free longitudinaledge of thel the: flanges 3 are'bars 1 1, connected by-cross-rods 12,` disposed atly 13 are therefore peculiar contour serve to lock the rollers, sofasto prevent thev IOO IIO
the bottom-sections to theirraised or closed positions. Although the invention has been described and shown applied to a wagon-body it is to be understood that the same may be used in connection with car-bodies or any receptacles designed to have their contents discharged through the bottoms thereof.
What is claimed isl. The combination with a plurality of pivotally-mountedbottoin-seotions 3 of a slidable series of lifting and supporting rollers movable below the pivots of said sections.
2. The combination with a plurality of pivotally-mounted bottom-sections; of a slidable series of lifting and supporting rollers, and means carried by each bottom-section and in the path of one of the rollers for facilitating the shifting of the sections into closed position'.
3. The combination with a plurality of pivotally-mounted bottom-sections; of a slidable series of actuating devices, and deflecting means upon the bottom-sections and in the paths of said devices.l
4. The combination with a plurality of pivotally-mounted bottom-sections; of an inclined deflecting device upon each section, a seat integral with said device, and movable means for successively contacting with the inclined portion and the seat to shift and support the bottom-section.
5. The combination with a plurality oi pivotally-mounted bottom-sections, and a bowed seat carried by each of said sections g of a plurality of simultaneously-movable actuating devices disposed to contact with and be held against movement by said seats and to support the sections in closed position.
6. The combination with a plurality of pivotally-mounted bottom-sections, of simultaneously-movable lifting and supporting devices, and means upon the sections for holding said devices against accidental displacement.
7. The combination with` a plurality of pivotally-mounted bottom-sections; of a series of rotatable lifting and supporting devices, means upon each of the bottomsections for holding said devices against accidental displacement, and deflecting portions upon the sections for directing said devices against the holding means.
