The object of the invention is to improve the construction of swinging farm-gates and to provide a simple and inexpensive one capable of swinging upward to counteract sagging, to enable it to swing clear of obstructions, and to provide a passage for small animals and the like.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate, the heavy lines showing the same in normal position, the dotted lines illustrating the position of the parts when the gate is elevated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the gate, illustrating the positions of the parts when the gate is used on an incline. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a keeper, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the latch.

The gate comprises the vartical bars 1 and 2, the rails 33 3 being pivotally attached at their ends to the bars 1 and 2 and connecting the same together. The said rails at all times maintain parallel relation to each other, as do also the bars. The guide 4 is located on the side of the gate and is pivotally connected to the top and bottom rails 3 and is spaced from the same by means of the blocks 5 5. The bar 6 is located on the same side of the gate as the guide 4. The said bar 6, however, is not spaced. from the rails 3 and is tapered from its upper toward its lower end. The prop 7 is pivoted at its lower end to the lower bar 3 in the vicinity of the bar 1. The upper end of the prop 7 bears against the rear inclined edge of the bar 6. The said prop passes between the guide 4 and the rails 3 3. The bars 1 are hinged to the post 8, while the post 9 is provided with a keeper 10. The block 11 is inserted between the bars 2 and 6, and the latch 12 is mounted upon said block and is adapted to bars 1 and that the rounded end 13 of the prop 7 may be shifted along the inclined edge of the bar 6 to maintain the rails 3 at a desired inclination or in horizontal position. This adjustment therefore may be resorted to to counteract sagging, to enable the gate to swing clear of obstructions, such as snow and the like, and also to provide a passage for small animals and at the same time present a barrier for larger animals. It will also be seen that the gate is simple, strong, and durable and in view of the fact that it requires but few parts is admirably adapted for farm purposes.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A gate comprising rails, a hinge bar pivot ally connected to said rails, a free end bar pivotally connected to said rails, said free end bar having its inner edge extending from the top to the bottom of the gate and pitched at an incline to a perpendicular, a prop pivoted at one end to one of said rails and having its opposite end rounded at the lower portion thereof, the curvature of the said end describing an arc, the center of which is located above the longitudinal axis of the prop, said prop being located upon the same side of the gate as the free end bar thereof and adapted to engage at its rounded end the inclined edge of said bar, a guide pivoted to the rails and lying over said prop, a latch-block attached to said free end bar and a latch at tached to said block.
