Description
CHAUNCEY A. DICKERMAN, OF NEW` HAVEN, CONNECTICUT. Letters Patent No. 84,804,7dated December` 8, 1868; anteflated November 30, 1868.` Y
IMPROVEMENT IN LABEL-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY A'.D1oKERMN,of VNew Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State o f Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Direction-Label; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and eiact description of the same, and which said drawings constitutepart of this speciication, and represent, in
Figure 1, a front v'iew, with the direction-card inserted;
Figure 2, the same view. with the card removed;
Figure 3, a rear under-side view;
Figure 4, a section online x x,- and in Figure 5, a transverse section on line y y.
This invention is designed for attachment to trunks, boxes, Ste., for the purpose of inserting a card,'upon which the direction is made, and so that the card inay be withdrawn and another inserted, without the detachment of the frame from the trunk; and consists in the construction of the frame for the insertion of the card, and the peculiar arrangement and combination therewith for securing the card in the frame.
`'lo enable others to construct my improvement, IA
will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the frame, formed from any suitable metal, having a panel-shaped opening, B, through its surface, and upon its under side a rabbet, a, is formed around the panel-opening, through the end at C; as seen in figs.
3, 4, and 5, so that a card may be inserted through the terial, is formed, of proper size for insertionv beneath the plate.
When the direction has been made' on the card, insert the end of the card through the Yopening in the end, C, of the plate. It passes freely along to the cross-bar D, guided by the edges a, then passes up over the crossbar D, and on to the end, as seen in. iigs. l, 4, and 5.
The cross-bar crowns thecard, both longitudinally and laterally, as seen .in figs. 4 and 5, which crowning serves to secure the card within the frame, but yet allows its easy withdrawal; but it cannot be accidentally removed.
The surface of the frame is sufioiently high above the surface of the card to protect the card froln injury.
Thus a single card, having the direction upon one side to one destination, and upon the other Iside for the return,`tl1e card may be changed, and a single card serve the direction betweentwopoints and return for a long time, which adapts this article to many uses.
I have represented the cross-bar as attached to the frame. I wish to be understood by this as claiming the introduction of a raised point near the centre of the label, and so combined with the frame, when in position, as to cause the crowningpof the card in the manner described.
I d o not wish to be-u'nderstood as broadly claiming a frame in which may be inserted the direction-label, v
as such is not new, as may be seen in the patent granted to J. Dudley, May 18, 1858. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, i
What I claim as new and useful, and desire tov sesecure by Letters Patent, is
The frame A, through which is formed an opening, B, and upon the under surface, upon three sides of the opening, a rabbet, a, is formed, `and so as to leave an opening throughthe end, C, for the insertion of the` card, and having combined therewith a convex plate, D, the Whole-constructed and arranged so as to be applied and operate in the manner set forth.
CHAUNOEY A. DIOKERMAN,
