Be it known that I, SYLVESTER A. J OHN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Hoop for VVashboilers and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to protectinghoops for washboilers and similar receptacles and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.

The object of the invention it to provide a hoop which is adapted to be applied to the lower edge of a boiler or like receptacle and which is provided with a flange that projects under the bottom of the receptacle and is adapted to relieve the bottom of wear. At the same time the said flange does not materially interfere with transmission of heat through the bottom of the vessel. The said hoop is also provided with a vertically-disposed flange which extends along the outer side of the vessel and protects the same. The ends of the vertical flange are provided with a securing-staple specifically arranged, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washboiler having the protecting-hoop applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section of the joined ends of the hoop. Fig.

The hoop 1 is formed from a strip of sheet metal and is provided with the horizontal flange 2 and the vertical flange 3. The said hoop is adapted to receive the lower edge of a vessel 4, the flange 2 extending under the bottom of the vessel and the flange 3 lying flat against the side of the same. against wear and rough usage. The end portion of the flange 3 is provided with a verti cally-disposed elongated opening 5, and the opposite end of the flange 3 is provided with a reduced tongue 6, which passes through the perforation 5. The end of the hoop 1 opposite to that provided with the tongue 6 is provided with the outstanding portion 7, located between the perforation 5 and the end of the hoop. The tongue 6 lies under said portion 7, and consequently the hoop fits flat against the vessel 4 throughout.

From the foregoing description it is obvious that a protective hoop is provided which may be easily and readily applied to a vessel and as easily and readily detached from the same. The hoop will in. a great measure preserve the integrity of the vessel and does not add materially to the weight thereof. Also the hoop is of simple and inexpensive construction and arrangement.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A protective hoop for vessels comprising a strip having a horizontal and a vertical flange which lie in close proximity to the bottom and sides of the vessel, the horizontal flange meetin at its ends without overlapping, one end of the vertical flange being reduced in breadth the other end being perforated, the reduced end passing through said perforation, said perforated end having an outstandin portion under which said reduced end fits.
