Specification of' Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application filed November IO, 1906. Serial No. 342,789.
To all 1,071,071@ it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WEBSTER BA1- LEY, a citizen of the,United States, residing at Ottawa, inthe county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Musical Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, concise,
- and exact description.
My invention relates to a pedaphone -or musical instrument adapted to be operated by the feet of a dancer during the progress of any desired character of dance.
My object is to provide a device of -this character which will be especially adapted for use` in connection with vaudeville or other entertaining performances.
Generally speaking, my invention contemplates a pedaphone comprising aplatform upon which a dancer may take the steps cfa.
dance, said platform being hollow and containing musical devices tuned according to a musical scale' and to be operated by plungers projectingwithin the platform, said plungers being adapted to be struck by the feet of the dancer in carrying out a dance, so that the operator while dancing may play a piece of music by means of said devices actuated by his feet. The platform may have any desired number of sets of musical devices, so
that any desired number of dancers may play the pedaphone at the same time lfor pur-` poses of duets, quartets, or the like.
I willdescribe my invention by'reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents one embodiment of my invention, reserving for the appended claims a statement of the parts, improvements, or combinations which I regard as novel with me.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pedaphone embodying my invention, showing the same adapted for operation by two parties with a portion of the cover broken away to show the bells within; andFig. 2 is a side elevation' of the platform, partially in section, .to show the plungers in-position to operate the tuned bells.
The same letters of reference designate the l same parts wherever they are shown.
As shown in Fig. l, eight musical devices tuned according to the musical scale, such as different-sized gongs a a., are mounted upon I n l Y 1n normal position.
Athe fioor -or base b of the platform A. Said gongs are provided with tappers cc, preferably secured to brackets d d, supported by the walls` of the platform, said tappers moving with` and preferably secured to the arms e e, adapted to be engaged by plungersff, secured in the top Wall g of the platform to cause said tappers to strike said gongs. -The tappers are normally held away from said` gongs by springs h, which are secured be- 1. Thov oombiootioo with o hollow par;
form having an inner floor and a top floor, of a number ofdiiferently-sized gongs mounted within the platform upon said inner floor,v
said gongs being tuned toa musical scale, and plungers projecting through the top .floor of said platform for operating said gongs, said plungers being adapted to be played by the feet of a dancer dancing upon the outer surface of said top floor.
2. The combina-tionwith a hollow platform having -aninner floor, of differently-tuned *gongs mounted upon the inner floor of saidV platform., brackets within said platform,
tappers supported by saidv brackets adapted to actuate said goings, springs for maintaining said tappers away from said gongs, and plungers supported by the -topwall of said platl form adapted to beV depressed by thegfeet of an operator to actuate said tappers.
3. The 'combination' 'with a .hollow plat-f form,. of differently-sized vgongs tuned ac-l cording to a musical scale, mounted upon the base of said platform, brackets within lsaid platform, tappers'for said gongs pivcted to.l
saidv brackets, arms moving with said tappers, springs supportedl between said arms and the base of the platform tending to main- 'Said tappel's away from said gongs, and my name this 6th day of November, A. D. spring-resltlrable plunges supported by the 1906.

nv Witness whereof I hereuntoy subscribe Wvitnesses P. Gr. SCHUL, AL. F. SCHOCH.
