Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. COMPI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leesburg, in the county of Loudoun and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention. is a tilting gate, and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter set forth in. this specification and the claims thereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view, the free ends of the levers broken away. Fig. 3 is a view looking down on the top of gate-and the hinge and latch posts, the levers and lever-posts reing re moved. Fig. 4 is a view showing the gate swung back between the hinge-posts and up out of the way. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the gate and lcalance-weight in position hinged. to one of the hinge-posts, the front hinge-post teing removed. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the free end of the gate with the spring-latch secured thereto resting against the inner face of one of the latchposts, the other latch-post teing removed.
My invention is descrited as follows The letter A represents the gate-panel.
The numeral 1 represents the upper frame bar of the gate-panel 2, the lower fra1ne-bar 3, the free-end frame-bar, and 4 the hingedend frame-tar of the gate-panel. This frame is filled in with any suitaitle material. The lower right-hand corner of said gate panel is provided with a perforation 5. Some little distance to the left of said perforation and practically on a line therewith is another perforation 6, and to the right of said peri'oration 5 and a little ahove the same is another perforation 7. The said gatepanel is hinged between two hinge-posts 8 and 9. Said hinge-posts are provided near their lower ends each with a perforation 1.0. Said gate-panel by means of the said perforations 5 and 10 and a bolt 11 is pivoted between said hinge-posts. Hinged to the said bolt 11 is a U-shaped weight 12, a little longer than the gate is tall, so that when the gate is turned up the bar 4 (of the gate-panel) will rest in said U-shaped weight. The free end 13 of said weight is secured to said panel 4 near its upper end by a chain or cable 14. The free end of the gate-panel is provided with a spring-latch 15, the lower end of which is secured to the panel 3, the upper' end being left free to spring back and forth. The free end of said gate-panel lets down I: etween two latch-posts 16 and 17. Passing through said latch-post is a bolt 18, under which the catch 19 of said spring-latch catches.
Situated on each side of the gate and on a line with the hinge-posts 8 and 9 are leverposts 20 and 21, and on each side and near the top of one of said lever-posts 20 are pivoted two levers 22 and 23, and near the top of the other lever-post 21 are pivoted two levers 24 and 25. Secured to the free end of said latch 15 is one end of a cord 26. Said cord passes through eyes 27 and 28 on the upper edge of said gate-panel, thence to an eye 29, secured to the lower edge and fulcrum end of lever 22, thence along the lower edge of said lever to its free end and through an eye 30, secured to said lever, to which end is secured a chain 31, to the lower end of which is secured. a handhold 32. Secured to said cord 26 is one end of another cord 33, which cord runs through an eye 34, attached to the fulcrum end of lever 24, thence along the under side of said lever to its free end, where it passes through an eye, and thence downwardly and is secured to a chain 35, and to the lower end of said chain is secured a handhold 36.
Running from the fulcrum end of the inner or near lever 22 is a cable 37, the lower end of which is fastened to a bolt 6 in the perforation 6 (see Fig. 3) in the lower right-hand corner of the gate-panel, and when the handi'old 32 is pulled on the first effect is to pull the free end of the latch back against the free end of the gate, and thus unlock the gate. The second effect is to throw the end of the gate up into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 4, and thereby entirely out of the gateway, the panel 4 dropping into the U-shaped weight 12. When the gate is approached from the other side, the operator takes hold of the handhold 36, which has exactly the same operation as above described in relation to lever 22, because there is secured to the fulcrum end of lever 24 a cable 38, the lower end of which is secured to said bolt 6 in said perforation 6. Secured to the fulcrum ends of the levers 23 and are cables 39 and 40, respectively, the lower ends of which are secured in the perforation 7 in the lower righthand corner of the gate-panel. When I wish to close the gate, I pull down the free end of either one of the levers 23 or 25, and the on either one of the levers 23 or 25 closes the gate, and when the panel goes down between the, latch-posts it is automatically locked.
This gate may be opened and closed by the driver of a vehicle while he is in his seat or an equestrian while in the saddle.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tilting gate, consisting of two hingeposts 8 and 9, situated on one side of a roadway two latch-posts 16 and 17, situated on the other side of the roadway; a rod 18, passing through said latch-posts; a gatepanel, having in its lower right-h and corner a perforation 5, and to the left and on a horizontal line with said perforation, a perforation 6,and to the right of said perforation 5 ,and above the same, another perforation 7, said gate-panel hinged between said hinge-posts by a bolt 11; a U-shaped weight, its lower end pivoted on said bolt 11, its free end movably secured to the upper right-hand corner of said gate-panel by a cable 12; lever- posts 20, and 21, secured, one on each side of the roadway and on a line with said hinge-posts 8 and 9; levers 22 and 23, secured, one on each side of said lever-post 20, and levers 24 and 25, one secured on each side of lever-post 21; cable 37, its upper end secured to the fulcrum end of lever 22, its lower end to the lower right-hand corner of the gate-panel and to the left of the perforation 5; a cable 38, its upper end secured to the fulcrum end of lever 24, its lower end secured to the lower righthand corner of the gate-panel and to the left of said perforation 5; cables 39 and 40, their upper ends secured to levers 23 and 25, respectively, their lower ends to said gate-panel to the right of said perforation 5, and a little above the same; a spring-la ch secured to the free end of said gate and adapted to catch under the bolt 18, cord 26, secured to the free end of said latch, passing thence along the upper edge of said gate, thence through eye 29, in lever 22, and cord 83, one end secured to said cord 26, its other end passing through eye 34, of lever 24, thence along said lever to its free end, thence through an eye and terminates in a handhold, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
