Description

THOMAS W. BROWN, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
.lletters Patent No. 83,359, dated October 27, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-AIR REGISTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all persons to whom these presents may come.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. Brown, of Reading, in the county of Berks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventil-ators or Hot-Air Registers; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-- Figure 1 is a top view,
Figure 2, a transverse section, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section, of a register-frame, with its slats and their operative-mechanism applied in accordance with my improvement.
The register-frame is shown, at A, as provided with three rotary slats, B B B, each of which laps on that next to it, and at its ends is pivoted to the frame or to one or more bars fixed thereto. The pivots or journals of the middle slat are-shown at a a, in fig. 3, those of the others being represented at a a, a (1, in figs.'1 and 2.
The several slats are connected by being pivoted, at
' one end of each, to a connection-bar, 0, arranged as represented.
A sectoral lever, D, is fixed directly upon the journal or of the middle slat, and made to extend therefrom, in manner as shown in the drawings. By placing the hand or foot of a person on and moving the said lever D, all
. the slats may be moved simultaneously relatively to one another.
The difi'creneebetween Iny register and others in connnon use is, that in mine the sectoral lever is fixed .directly to the journal of the middle slat, whereas in others it turns on a separate journal, and is connected with the connection-bar by a pivot, which 1 do not have in my register. Thus it will be seen that by my improvement I save the double pivoting of the sectoral lever, becauseI attach it directly to, and so as to turn or revolve simultaneously with, the journal of the slat, and do not pivot it to the connection-bar. By thus dispensing with the two pivots, 1 save the expense and labor of making them, and, what is ofniuch more importance, I avoid the friction incident to their use, and thereby enable the slats to be operated with much greater facility. I,
\Vhat, therefore, 1. claim, in the ventilator or hot-air register, is
The iniprm'ementof having the sectoral lever fixed directly to the slat-j ournal, when the slats are pivoted to the frame, and to a connection-bar having no pivoted connection with the sectoral lever, as set forth, the whole being substantially-as described and represented.
