To all whom it may concern:
Be it known the we, MATHEW E. ROTH- BERG and ALFRED ERNST, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State ofOhio, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Coke-Ovens; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention relates to coke-ovens of the regenerative type, having for its object the provision of a continuous supply of heated air to the combustion-chambers of the ovens by reversing the flow of waste gases used for heating the regenerators and the iiow of cold air outside of the ovens proper, thus preventing injurious shocks to the brickwerk of the ovens, which cause the develo ment of cracks in the same and ultimate ylead to loss of gas.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter z designates the foundation of a battery of ovens a b c d.
F is the main iiue,- extending longitudinally of the battery of ovens in the foundation thereof and having openings A in its top wall communicating with the oH-gas flues of the ovens. This flue F extends beyond the batteryiof ovens at one end thereof, where it is provided with a butteriy-valve V', controlling the communication of the ilue F', with flanking regenerator-chambers R R2 at These regeneratorchambers project beyond the ovens at each end and beyond the ue F at one end into communication with the stack S, the opening to which is controlled by a butteriiy-valve l V4, which cuts off one chamber from commu- Iication with the stack, while it throws the other chamber into communication therewith in an alternate manner.
B5 is a fan located outside ofthe oven-battery between the stack S and the termination of main flue F at one end of the ovens and which, through the passage B, communicating with flues H in the iioors of the ovens, establishes a circulatipnofa'ir, blowing the same through themedium of butterfly-valve V2V into one Ver'idofthe regeneratorchambers R R2 alternately and through the medium of a similar valve Va controlling the communication of the other ends of said chambers with hot-air iiues Fz Fa alternately from said chambers into the hot-air flues, which are larranged longitudinally in the oven-fo undation laterally of the regeneratorchambers, and have connection by openings C D with the combustion-chambers of the ovens, where the hot air meets the gas-sup- The oven to which our invention is shown applied is that of the patent granted to M. E. Rothberg, No. 804,053, dated November 7, 1905, in which Dis the hot-air inlet-chamber under the reverting heating-dues B B2 B3 B4 in the side Walls of the oven-chambers. Each chamber D communicates by openings N with the combustion-chamber C of the oven A', located under the same, along which the heated air passes, being at the same time mixed with the gas from the burner X, branching from the gas-feed pipe W. Near the center of the oven the heated air and gas pass through the short transverse fiue B7 to the series of heating-nues B BZ B3 Bf, and therefrom the products of combustion pass down throu h thevertical flue F to the main off-gas iue leading to the stack.

In coke-ovens, the combination of regenerator-chambers, lateral hot-air iues having communication with said chambers at one end thereof, a fan having an air supply and an exhaust communication with said chambers at the other end of the same, valved means located outside the ovens for controlling the exhaust communication of said fan with said chambers, and valved means located outside the ovens for controlling the communication of said chambers with the hot-air ue.
