Description

To all whom it may concern.-
' tlnitedfitatw gem can,
REUBEN B. DE BARE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 83,262, dated October 20,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWINGMACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, REUBEN B. DEBARE, of Phil-r adelphia city, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Portable, Adjustable, and ReciprocatingSaws, for sawing cord-Wood by hand; and I do declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specificatiomin which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the machine.
Figure 2 shows the balance-wheel in'front, so as to be easily transported by hand.
Figure 3, the catch.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of a series; of saws, operated with a reciprocating motion, and the wood held by a lever in a v-shaped rack.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to -describe its construction and operation. g
A represents a square frame, that supports the devices for sawing wood. 7
B B are two or more cross-cut saws, thathwork horizontally, and are adjustable, up or down, by means of the horizontal name 0, the saws moving with their flat guide-plates D D sliding in grooves in the front cross-piece of the frame 0. v
The lever G of the'frame 0, when raised or lowered, is held in its place by the catch H, so as to hold the frame 0, with its saws, at any angle required, (whilst the saws are Working) according to the thickness of the wood to be sawed.
The flat guide-plates D D are screwed permanently on the top of the saw-frames E E.
The weightvof the sa'ws B B, and frame, is suflicient to aid in the sawing, but can be assisted by the end of lever ,G being raised so as to bear the saws B down upon the wood.
The frontcross -piece of the frame Chas rollers, G, that movefupon the top of the flat guides D, so as to give a free and steady movement to the saws, as the saws operate with their flat guide-plates D in the grooves of the front cross-piece G.
The wood J rests in v-shaped racks K K, that hold the sticks perfectly firm to their places, whilst the curved and adjustable lever-rack L grasps and binds the wood tightly and permanently in the racks K K during the sawing.
This lever-rack L operates on a hinge, M, attached to a cross-piece of the frame A.
N is an upright rack, as a catch, to hold the lever L in its proper position.
P is a horizontal shaft, extending across the frame A, supported by bearings R, with a fly-wheel, S, at
one end, and a crank, T, at the other, for operating the machine.
Upon the centre of the shaft P is'a pinion, U, the one half being smooth on its periphery, and the other half being toothed, so as to move on the inside of a double rack, V, and "by its revolution, the rack V is moved backward and forward, in a reciprocating mo-. tion, with great rapidity and as'the double rack Vis attached to the shanks I, connecting the saws B, it imparts to the cross-cut saws motion.
Saws may be attached at both ends of the double rack V, and a duplicate machine be operated when required. i w
The balance-wheel S is'movable, and is intended also to be placed at any time on the fiont shaft W, so
that the Whole machine may be moved from place to double rack V, so that the saws can be worked in opposite directions, at the same time, by applying a belt from any motive-power to the balance-wheel S.
Y is an upright centre-post, with a slotted centre, in which the lever G operates on a pivot at top, and in which slot the double rack V moves horizontally; the slot in the post Y being a perfect guide for the rack V to move in, whilst the rack receives its horizontal and reciprocating motion from its centre pinion U; the teeth of the one side of the rack V being set at an opposite angle from the teeth on the opposite rack V, so that the teeth on the one side of the pinion U have a continuous gear into the rack V, and the smooth half of the pinion alternately travelling on the oppo- 'site side and in the curved ends of the rack V, thus giving a reciprocating motion to the saw or saws B, free of any interruption, having no dead-point or contre of motion to overcome, common to crank and other moving-powers. a
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
The arrangement of the half pinion U with its reciprocating double rack V, guide Y, with its adj ustable lever G, grooved flame G, guide-plates D D, and wood-racks K K with their curved rack-lever L, when combined and operating with the adjustable cross-cut saws B B, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.'
