Be it known that we, TALTER F. PALMER and JonN WINNACQTT, residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklvn in the county of Kings and State of Ne Iorl-g citizens of the United States, have invented a new and Improved PTGSSWOllD-RGGO. of which the following is full clear end exact description.
Our invention ates to a do e for recording the Work of a printingpress and ma chines of similar character.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide means for showing the tlworeticel number of papers produced and in connection therewith means for indicating when at web breaks.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificw tion, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

In order to indicate when the web breaks, a
second'solenoid 34 is provided. Tlhissolenold is provided with an armature 35 and with contact- making devices 36 and 37, also with a projectionBS which is designed to engage a s 13111839 to i a secon spr ng 40 placed adjacent thereto. The spri s 39 and R) are designed t make contact with each other in order to co'nnect two wires 41 and 42. The wire 42 is connected with a lever43, pivotally mounted upon a stationary part of the machine. This lever is provided with a long jaw 44 and a short jaw 45, separatcd'by a notch 46, designed to receive a pin 47 upon a sliding block 48,. This block acts as a journal for a roll 49 of the ress and is forced upwardly by a spring 50.

This conductor leads to an electromagnet 56', which controls the armature 57. This armature is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 58 and'carries a spring-arm 59, bearing a sharp-pointed pen 60.
When the magnet 56 is excited by the clos ing of the circuit in the conductors 41, 42, and 55, a sharp blow'will be given to thepaper on the cylinder by the pen 60, this blow being orce it into contact with,
accelerated by a weight 61, mounted on the arm 59.
The position of the pen 60 is normallyout of contact with the paper, and the operation of it is such as to puncture thepaper and then to fly back to a short distance from it, so that the point of the pen will not interfere with the rotation of the disk and the paper. The pen maybe adjusted by a set-scrcw 62. The circuit for operating these devices is complcted after it passes through the magnet 56 by a conductor 63, connected with the magnet and with a spring 64. This spring normally bears upon an insulatin -bar 65, mounted on the block 20. When t is block is down, it keeps the end of the spring away from a contact-piece 66, which is directly connected with the conductor 41 but when the block is raised the spring 64 is allowed to move into the normal position, so as to make the con tact at this point and permit the circuit to be closed. This electric circuit is provided with batteries or other means for generating a current. The operation of this art of the device is as follows: When the b ock 20 is in depressed position, owing to the fact that the solenoid 10 is at the top of its stroke and no .motion is imparted to the press, this electric circuit. cannot be completed by any manipulation of the other parts, and the paper may be removed from t e machine or broken at will without causing the pen 60 to puncture may then be broken, although the machine is in operation, without puncturingthe paper. In a recording device the combination of a roll adaptedto receive a web, resilient, means for forcing said roll toward the web, a projection connected with said roll,'a lever adapted to receive said projection and to be moved therebv when the roll moves, a'contact device adapted to be engaged by said lever when so moved, an electrlc circuit hav-' ing an open contact device connected with said first-mentioned contact device and with said lever, additional means for closing said electric circuit, a recording instrument, and means in said circuit for controlling said recording instrument.
9. A recording device comprising a movable element having a projection, means for" moving said element, a. ever having two arms separated by a space, both armsbeing adapted to engage said projection and the space being located in position for reand a short arm separated by a s ace, the
short arm being located on the si e of the lever toward said projection and the space being located in position for receiving the projection when said member moves to ex treme position, an electric circuit, a recording device controlled by said circuit, and a contact member adapted to be closed by said lever when the projection engages the long arm thereof. 7
