UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
BRAKE FOR RAILWAY-CARS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303,384-
To ctZZ whom, it may concern: v
Be it known that I, VVILHELM KRAMER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway-brakes; and its object is to stop the train from running as quickly as possible.
The invention consists in that to the hitherto employed brake a supplementary brake is added, the brake-blocks being connected with a lever system which is actuated by a compressed-air cylinder, whereby the brakeblocks are moved downward, so that they come, besides being pressed against the circumference of the wheels, in contact with the rails. By these means a greatest possible friction is obtained by which the train is stopped practically instantly.
The construction which is shown in the accompanying drawing is as follows: The additional brake is provided below the framework of the railway-car. a is the compressed-air cylinder, the piston-rod of which is pivotally connected with a lever b, which, like the lever c and the double-armed lever d, is rigidly fixed on a common axle. A rod e which is pivotally connected with the lower arm of the lever (Z is in turn pivotally connected with levers f and g, which are centered in the framework of the car at h and in a projection i of the brake-block, respectively. To the upper arm of the double-armed lever d a rod e is attached, which in a similar manner as rod e is in connection with levers f and g, centered at h in the framework of the car and in a projection 11 of the brake-block, respectively. A rod is, which is attached to lever 0 is in connection with the identical brakelever system for the other wheel of the car by a is opened, whereby the piston of the latter is pushed out, thereby turning lever b, and consequently the double armed lever d, which attracts by its rods 6 and e respectively, the levers f and g and f and g,where bythe brake-blocks are moved downward, so that they come in contact with the rails and produce a very great friction, owing to which the train is quickly brought to stopping. The brake-blocks of the other wheel are actuated in identical manner by the rod 7c, connecting the lever system for the same with that for the first wheeh I Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An additional brake for railway-cars, comprising in combination with a compressedair cylinder a, a lever b pivotally connected to the piston-rod of said cylinder and rigidly fixed on an axle, a lever 0 also rigidly fixed to said axle, a double-armed lever (Z also rigidly fixed to said axle, a rod 6 pivotally connected to the lower arm of said lever (Z, two levers f and g pivotally connected to said rod e and centered at 7b in the framework of the car and in a projection i of one brake-block respectively, a rod e pivotally connected to the upper arm of said lever (Z, two levers f and g pivotally connected to said rod (2 and centered at h in the framework of the car and in a projection '5 of the other brake-block respectively; a rod I: attached with one end to said lever c and with the other end to the double-armed lever (Z of the identical lever system for the second wheel, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose of moving the brakeblocks downward and bringing them in frictional contact with the rails upon the compressed-air cylinder being actuated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
