Description

l l y i i,
- m ce www JAMES K. RNQURSE, or -WEST MEDWAY; MASSACHUSETTS.
Pawn; No.l 83,993. dated November 1o, 186s.
m semauie'mfemd e 1n the neem Patent and making par: er um um To all to 'whom these presents shall come:
Be it known that I, JAMES K. P. NOURSE, of West Medway, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massaf chusetts, have invented a new and useful Automatic Feed-Water Regulator for- Steam-Generators; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, 1und exact descriptionthereof, due reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a section ofsuch invention.
The object of this invention is to provide a device vfor attachment to steam-boilers, for the purpose of insuring a supply of water to such boiler, and maintain it at a proper level therein, as well as to give warning if; by accident, this Supply of water is cut off from the boiler.
The invention consists lin the combination, with an ordinary pump and steam-boiler, of a series of pipes and-a steam and water-vessel, communicating with the water-space of the boiler, and provided with a float Afor regulating the supply of feed-water to the pump,
in such manner that, should the water in the boiler fall below the proper level, the float in the vessel will Aopencommunication to the pump, and, by supplying it with water, cause such pump, to force the water into the boiler and replenish itssupply, and whenthe water in the boiler has reached the desired level, the ascent of the iloat shuts oi' the supply of water to the pump, and consequently to the boiler.
Furthermore, vthe vessel, float, and feed-pipes are also arranged with respect to a steam-whistle, suitably applied to the boiler, that, shouldthe pump, from any cause, entirely cease to perform its functions, and the water in the boiler and in the auxiliary vessel, fall to or below a certain point, the'steam-whistle will sound .an alarm, and give timely warning to the attendant of the boiler. p
-Inthe drawing above mentioned, as illustrating my invention, B denotes a portion of a steam-boiler, of any ordinary construction, and alongside of which is disposed a hollow closed vessel or float-chamber, c, this vessel communicating with the water-space of the boiler by a pipe, @leading out of 'its lower part, by which means the water will stand upon an equal level in the vessel and the boiler.
A steam-whistle; H, of ordinary construction, is applied to the top of the vessel C, and communicates with the steam-space of the boiler by a lateral pipe, a, the point of communication of this pipe with the whistle'being controlled byalever, h, properly pivoted to the under side of the top of the vessel C, the free end of such lever being connected, by a chain o'r other means to a float disposed within such vessel, and buoyeduipon the water contained therein.
"P, in the drawing, denotes a force-pump of any well' 'y known construction, its discharging-pipe, for feeding the boiler with water, being shown, at j, as extending into the lower part of such boiler. The .supply-pipe of the pump P is shown, at d, as communicatlng'with a suitable tank or other water-receptacle, such pipe d, extending upward through the bottom of the vessel 0, and into the interior thereof; where it is given a siphon shaped bend, and carried back, downward through the bottom of such vessel C, and thence carried to the,A pump P, the portion of the Siphon within the float. chamber C being provided with a cock or gate for regnlating the supply of water tothe pump.
Within the chamber or vessel 0, and buoyed upon the water contained therein, is al float, F, of; proper construction, this ioat being connected to the cock or gate g by a lever, e, or other device, in such manner that, should the water in the boilerbe raised above the level at which it is desirable to maintain it, the rising 'of the float with the water lwill close the gate and shut oii 'thesupply of Ywater to the pump, which will continue to run without throwing water.
Should the water fall below the proper point in the boiler, and, as a consequence, in the vessel O, the 10W- ering of the float with the water w' open the gate g,
and allow water to iiow through the pipe d and supply y the puinp.
Should 'the pump, by any accident, be disabled, or
unable to force water to the boiler, and the water in suchboiler fall to an improper or a. determined point,
the fall of the iloat FY to this point will depress the lever h, and by this means open communication be tween thesteam-s'pace of the boiler-and thewhistle H, and sound an alarm.
Having now described my invention, and themanner in which the same is or may be carried into e'ect,
What. I claim, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the vessel 0 and iioat F, of the pump P, -the bent pipe d, and its gate g, contained within the said vessel, and connected to the said float, the whole lbeing arranged substantially as herein shown and specified.
2. In combination with the arrangement of parts claimed' in the preceding clause, I claim the steamwhistle H, pipe a, and lever h, connected with the oat F, as specified, the whole being arranged substantially as herein shown and set forth.
JAMES K. P. N OURSE.
