Be it known that I, RICHARD RUSSELL, of Stephen, Marshall county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching and Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grading-machines of the type employing a plow and a side-delivery conveyor operating in connection therewith.
The object of my invention is to provide an easy-running machine wherein the motorpower for the operating mechanism is carried on the machine-frame.
A further object is to provide a ditching and grading mechanism which can be easily and quickly adjusted to adapt the machine for the different conditions and variations in the character of the soil.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a ditching and grading machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the rear portion of the machine. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section looking toward the rear of the machine. Fig. 5 is a similar view looking toward the forward end of the machine. Figs. 6 and 7 are details of the conveyor-frame. Fig. 8 is a detail showing the different positions `in which the plow can be adjusted.
In the drawings, 2 represents a frame rectangular in form, composed, preferably, of channel-bars on account of their strength and rigidity and having a suitable platform 3, whereon the operating mechanism of the machine is arranged.
The frame 2 is supported on front and rear axles 4 and 5, having wheels 6 and 7 of ordinary construction, the forward aXle being provided with the usual draft-pole 8. At one side of the frame 2 is a plow-beam 9, that is hinged at a point near its middle to a horizontal bar 10, that is transversely arranged beneath the frame 2 and is secured to a hanger Il, that depends from the frame 2 on the opposite side of the machine from said plowbeam. A second hanger 12 is provided on the same side of the frame as the hanger 11, opposite the rear-end of the beam 9, and is pivotally connected therewith by a transversely-arranged bar 13. A quadrant 14 is mounted on the bar 13, having teeth adapted to be engaged by a latch 15 on a lever 16, that is pivoted at its lower end on the bar 13 and connected at a point intermediate to its ends by a link 17 with a strap 18, that is secured to the plow-beam 9.
The movement of the lever 16 back and forth over the quadrant will tilt the plowbeam in or out and vary its position with respect to the work. 19 is a plow-point, 20 a moldboard, and 2l and 22 are suitable braces or bars that support said moldboard and point below said beam. A wheel-colter 23 is provided in front of the point 19, and the usual surface rolling wheel 24 is provided at the eXtreme forward end of the beam, whereby the dip or inclination of the plow-point into the soil is regulated.
Upon the frame 2 standards 25 and 26 are arranged, having bearings for a shaft 27. A sleeve 23 is loosely mounted on said shaft, and on said sleeve a wheel 29 is secured. A chain 30 is attached at one end to said sleeve and adapted to be wound thereon and pass over an idle roller 31 to the forward end of the plow-beam 9.
By revolving the wheel 29 the forward end of said beam can be raised or lowered according to the depth that it it desired to have the plow-point dig into the soil. A wheel 32 is secured on the shaft 27, and a chain 33 connects said shaft with the cross-bar 13, and said wheels 29 and 32 are suiiiciently near together so that the operator can manipulate both of them at the same time and raise or lower the forward and rear ends of the plowbeam simultaneously.
I prefer to provide bell-cranks 33 on the standards 26, having arms that are adapted to be swung in between the spokes of the wheels 29 and 32 and lock them in any desired position.
Beneath the machine-frame is a transversely-arranged conveyor-frame 34, having its receiving end near the moldboard 2O and provided with a roller 35, mounted in bearover which a conveyor-belt ings at said end,

The opposite end of the conveyor-frame 34 is provided with longitudinally-arranged slots 37 and laps by the inner end of a second conveyor-section 39, that is also arranged transversely with respect to the machine-frame and extends out beyond the same, forming a continuation of the frame 34. A shaft 33, mounted in bearings in the hangers 11 and 12, passes through slots 37 and the conveyor-section 39 and allows section 34 to be adjusted lengthwise.
Rods 40, provided with turnbuckles 41, connect the frame 2 with the conveyor'-A yframe 34, and by adjusting said turnbuckles the position of the receiving end of the conveyer 34 with respect to the moldboard can be changed and at the same time the belt 36 loosened yor tightened, as desired.
A shaft 43 is mounted in bearings in the outer end of the frame 39 and provided with a roller 44, over which the conveyor-belt 36 passes. This shaft 43 is mounted at each end in boxes 45, that are adjustable on said frame 39 and allow the conveyor-belt and driving-chain to be made slack or tightened,
- as desired. A sprocket 46 is secured on the plow and conveyor shaft 43, Aconnected by a driving-chain 47 with a similar sprocket 48 on a shaft 49, that is supported at one end in the hanger 12' (see Fig. 5) and at the other end in a hanger 50. A sleeve 51, forming one member of a clutch, is mounted on the shaft 49 in position to engage the other member 52 of a clutch that is operable by means of an arm 53 and a lever 54. A sprocket 55 is secured on the sleeve 51, connected by a chain 56 with asimilar sprocket 57 on the driving-shaft 53 of an engine 59, preferably of the gasolene type, mounted on the frame 2.
Upon the frame 2 I provide brackets 60, having bearings for shafts 61 and 62 thereon. These shafts are connected, respectively, by chains 63 and 64 with the free ends of the conveyor- frames 34 and 39, and by revolving the said shafts the receiving and discharge ends of said frames can be raised or lowered to adjust them the desired distance from the ground. Operating- wheels 64 and 65 are mounted on the shafts 6l and 62 and provided with ratchets 66 for locking the said shafts in any desired position.
The operation of the lows: The conveyor-belt having been set in motion the operator will grasp the lever 16 and tilt the plow laterally to any desired angle with respect to the receiving end of said conveyor, having previously adjusted the the desired distance from the ground. The machine is then set in motion, and the plow digging into the soil will direct the material up to the receiving end of the conveyor, which will convey it to the opposite side of the machine for discharge into the roadway or other desired dumping-point.
machine is as fol-` By a simple revolution of the wheels 29 and 32 the height of the plow from the ground can be altered, and the operator at any time can vary the angle ofthe plow with respect to the conveyor by the manipulation of the lever 16. In raising or lowering the plowpoint it is only necessary for the operator to revolve the wheel 64 to adjust the conveyorframe 34 and maintain the proper relative position between it and the plow. Whenever desired the discharge end of the sidedelivery conveyor may be raised or lowered, according to the character of the ground where the machine is used.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a side-delivery conveyor arranged beneath the same, a plow and beam provided near the receiving end of said conveyor, means pivotally connecting the under side of sai d beam with said frame and means connected with said beam for tilting said plow laterally to vary its position with respect to said frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a side-delivery conveyor provided beneath the same, a plow-beam, a plow-point and moldboard suspended thereon, bars connected to said trame and pivotally attached to the under side of said plow-beam, and a lever mechanism attached to said beam for tilting it laterally, for the purpose specied.
3. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a side-delivery conveyor provided beneath the same, a plow-beam and plow proper suspended therefrom, hangers depending from said frame on the opposite side thereof from said plow, bars pivotally connected to said hangers at one end and at the other to said beam, and means for tilting the said beam and plow laterally.
4. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a side-delivery conveyor operating beneath the same, a plow provided with a beam land located at the receiving end of Said conveyor, bars 10 and 13 pivotally connected at one end to said beam and a lever device mounted on said bar 13 and connected with said plow-beam for tilting the same laterally, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a frame, of a side-delivery conveyor operating beneath the same, hangers dep ending from said frame, a plow having a beam provided at the receiving end of said conveyor, bars pivotally connected at their ends to said hangers and to said beam, and a lever mechanism mounted on one of said bars by means of which said plow and beam are tilted laterally, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a side-delivery conveyor provided beneath the same, a plow provided at the receiving end of said conveyor, bars pivotally ICO IIO
connecting said plow with said frame, chains connected with said plow and one of said bars, and means for winding up said chains to raise or lower said bars and vary the adjustment of said plow.
7. The combination, with a frame, of a transverse conveyor arranged beneath the saine, a plow having a beam provided at the receiving end of said conveyor, bars extending transversely of said frame and pivot-ally supported at one end and pivotally connected at their opposite ends to said beam, said conveyor operating between said bars, and a hoisting mechanism mounted upon said wheeled frame and connected with said bars, for the purpose speciiied.

The combination, with a wheeled frame provided with hangers on one side, of transversely-arranged bars pivotally connected at one end to said hangers, a plow-beam having a suitable plow pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said bars, a lever pivoted on one of said bars at a point near its pivoton said beam, a link connecting said lever and said beam, a locking device provided on said lever, and a hoisting mechanism mounted on said frame and connected with said bars, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with awheeled frame, having hangers, of a side-delivery conveyor comprising two sections having contiguous ends that lap by each other, one of said ends having slots to receive the ends of a shaft mounted in the other section, and said shaft having bearings in said hangers, and means for adjusting said sections to loosen or tighten the conveyor-belt, substantially as described.
10. The combination, with a wheeled frame, of a transverse conveyor comprising two sections having their contiguous ends lapping by each other, one of said ends being provided with longitudinal slots, a shaft mounted in the other end and slidable in said slots, hangers depending from said frame and having bearings for said shaft, adjustingrods connecting the inner section of said conveyor with said frame, and a plow provided at the receiving end of said conveyor.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination, with a suitable frame, of a side-delivery conveyor provided beneath the same and comprising two frames having overlapping contiguous ends, one provided with lengthwise slots, a shaft passing through said overlapping ends and said slots and pivotally connecting'said sections and allowing lengthwise movement of one with respect to the other, means for adjusting said movable section longitudinally, means for raising or lowering the free ends of said sections, a conveyor-belt common to both sections, means for driving said belt, and a plow provided at the receiving end of said conveyor.
