,gam-'ti STEPHEN Q. CAREY; OF
WAXAHATCHIE, TEXAS.
Letters Patent No. 83,926, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVED HAY AND COTTON-PRESS. l
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN Q. CAREY, of vVVaXahatchie, in the county of Ellis, and State of Texas, have invented a new and improved Hay and Cotton- Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a 4 full, clear, and exact description of the construction the platen, in starting, moves quickly, but as it ap-` proaches the end of its movement its velocity decreases,
and its power proportionately increases.
In the drawingsfB is the press-box, supported by a frame, A, and containing the platen I?, which con1- presses the hay or cotton into a bale, at the upper end of the box.
O C are doors, hinged to the frame A at al a., and provided with a cross-bar, c, attached totheir outer side by a headed bolt and slot, b, and having tenons, c c', that, when the doors are closed, enter notches or mortises in the frame-timbers at l( (l, and thereby hold the doors firmly in place during the compressing of the bale.
The top or cover E is strengthened by braces E E', and is hinged to the top of the frame at e e, so that it can be turned back out of the way when lling the press-box with hay or cotton. Thel under side of the cover E has attached to it a bed, Il, with cross-grooves, to receive the bale-hoops.
The platen is raised, to compress the bale, by I'neans of a cord or chain, G G, running in grooves or slots, y g, in the end walls of the box, and passing over pulleys H H', in the cover E,'and then down, outside of the press-box, at each end ofthe box, one end of the cord or chain being fastened to a tapering spirallygrooved pulley, I, on a shaft, J, under the press-box, and the other end being fastened to a similar pulley, I', on the other end of the same shaft.
The cord Gis continuous, passing from pulley I over pulley H, thence down in the groove y, to the end of the platen, and over a pulley in vsuch end, thence to and once around a spool or pulley, M, on the other side of the platen, thence to the other end of the platen,
l over the pulley there, up groove g, over pulley H, and
down to pulley-I.
K is a large pulley at the middle of the shaftJ, from which a cord or chain, N, passes to 'a capstau, L, where the power is applied to the press. By turning the capstan L, the shaft J and pulleys I I are rotated, raising the platen against the cotton or hay in the upper end of the press-box. i y At first, while the hay is but little compressed, its resistance to the platen is but small, and the latter can be moved with considerable speed, with the outlay of but little power.
To accommodate my press to this fact, I have pro; vided the tapering pulleys I I', having the spiral groove ii. The cord G is fastened at the outer endof the grooves t t, and, as the pulleys are turned, windsiup in the groove. Accordingly, when rthe platen is irst starting, and till it approaches the end'of its upward movement, the cord G, winding around the larger end of the pulleys I I', raises it with great rapidity, but as it nears the upper end of its movement, the cord, having wound down to the small end of the pulleys, moves it much more slowly, but with greatly increased power.
The whole arrangement is very simple. The press is strong and durable, and can be operated with much greater speed and convenience than the screw-presses, and other presses in common use.
I am aware that the several devices herein described, and mainly also their combination, are not new, andl do not therefore claim any of said devices separately, but
The arrangement, herein described, of the shaft J, pulleys I I', cord G, pulleys H H', platen l?, press-box B, capstan L, cord or chain N, and large flanged pulley K, all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
To the above specification of my improvement, I have signed my hand, this 8th day of August, 1868.
S. Q. CAREY.
