ally opposite .the'lug A with an extension or arm N, which projects radially from the side margin o' ythe body portion and extends at one side of and is adapted to be -adjustaloiy secured to the standard D2, which latter standard is located near the opposite end of said block. The armv A is shown as iorining an endwise extension of a4 radial rib A3 on the innTnD srariisl PATENT onirica.
disk A. A passage a, extending through the l said rib and arm, forms part oi' the passage by which air is supplied to the motor.
Attached to the disk A and projecting from the same beyond the pivot-stud E is an arm l, in which is mounted a horizontal tool The disk A and arm Itogether constitute a rigid iraine which carries the motor and the tool-carryingsliai't G and which is pivotally connected with the plate by the pivotstud E, which is located between the saidfshait and the motor in such manner that the saidshaft and the motor are adapted to move or swing vertically.
The standard 1)' is provided with a slot. d,
arranged eoncentricallyfwith the pvot pin or stud E, and a-clamping-screw lpasses through the curved slot d and engages the arm A: on the'disk A, said' arm being preferh ably provided with a depending lug a having a screw-threaded yaperture which is cnm gaged by the. end ol`: said clamping-screw, which latter is provided with a milled head The rigid frame formed by the diskA and arin lA is thus adapted to swing on the pivot-stud E in suoli inanncr that the tool-shai't'G may be raised and lowered relatively to the base-plate l), whileI 'the clamping-screw i? is adapted to clamp the arln A to the standard 1)'2 and to rigidly hold the said frame in any position in whichitmay be placed or adjusted;
'lho tool-slumI G is shown as arranged par allol with the axis of' rotation ol thenrotor and provided with a grinding-disk l1, although itmay carry any other kind ol arctative grinding,I cutting, or polishing tool. Said sha'lt is mountcd in bearings l l2 on the outer ond of the' arm l and projects beyond o r overhangs the adjacent end ci the plate Y.
D. ,inasmuch as the traine formed by the diskA and the arm i is pivoted to the baseplate at a point between the said toolshal"t and the axis of rotation of the motor, when' the arm AZ is adjustedjvertieally on the of the shaft G outside I2'. In the instance illustrated, moreover,
A other elevated `.from said surface.
- the tool carried by said shaft withrespcct to the surface of the vork or object on which the plate D rests,'while the motor is brought between the standards and in anearly central position over said plate.
In the4 particular construction shown the supporting-arm I is widened horizontally at its outer end and is provided with laterally- Separated arms which carry the-two bear-- ings I I2 for the shaft G. Provision isc made for driving the said shaft from the motor, consisting `of a belt-pulley B on the rotative part or wheel B of the motor and a correspending belt-pulley J, attached to the shaft G, said belt-pulley J in the particular construction shown being mounted on the end of the bearings I and the grinding-wheel H is attached to that end of the shaft which bears the pulley G outside 'of the said pulley,lthisconstruction bringing the grinding-wheel laterally beyond or outside' of the adjacent side margin of -thc baseplate B and also outside of the belt-pulley B of the motor, which projects in the instance shown beyond said side edge of the baseplate. This construction is employed in order that the grinding-wheel may he moved along the surface upon which the base-plate rests closely adjacent ti. a raised flange or part projecting upwardly To provide a strong and rigid connection between the arm I and the disk A, said arni is widenedat` its inner end and arranged to overlap the said disk-A in its part adjacent to the pivot-stud E, said'arm having an opening or aperture i, through which projects said stud and the lug A on the disk A. Said lug is made of considerable lateral width and arranged to project from the rear face of said disk A, so that it has a long bearing on the stud E, and will thereby afford a iirin and vrigldconnection between the motor-carrying frame and the supporting-plate. i
In order that a close iit or hearing between thelug A andl the pivot-stud E may be always maintained, notwithstanding wear ofv 'the arts, said lug A is, as herein shown, provided withv a longitudinal slit extending lnwardly from the outer end of the ing to the bearing-a erture, and a clamping-bolt az'is provided ywhich th'e parts on opposite sides 4of the slit may be drawn together to tighten the bearing about the pivot-stud.
The shaft G and its bearings I I2 are shown as adapted for taking up any wear thatmay take place in the use of the tool, said shaft for this piu'pose being provided 'any form of rotative grinding, cutting,
esame with two cones or conical enlargements g g and the bearings I I2 having screw-threaded sleeves i i2, which enter screwgthreaded apertures in the said bearings and are provided with internal conical bearing-surfaces which engage the said bearing-concs g g on said shaftG. Said shaft G may be provided with or polishing tools. Preferably the shaft will be made square between the hearings I I2, as shown in the drawings, and will have opposite Hat faces, to which may be secured cutters K K, as shown in Fig. 4, such as may be used for dressing or laning the surfaces of wood panels or the liiie.` When the shaft is thus made square between the hearings I I, the latter will have the form of split bearings or be rovided with caps which may be reinovedpto enable the shaft to be taken lateraily from the bearings, as shown in the drawings.
` tIhe tool illustrated is provided with two handles L and M, which may be gras ed when handlin the saine. The handle is shown as ma e lallow and attached to the outer end of the,arm A2 and adapted for connection -at its outer end with a supply-pi e. The handle. M is shown as attached to tie upper surface of the arm I, which carries the rotative tool-shaft.
For facilitating the exact adjustment of the tool-shaft with respect to the base-plate l), I have provided an adjusting-screw N, which engages an 'arm 'n on the standard D2 and bears upwardly against. an opposing surl'aec of the arm A?, which, as herein shown, is formed on the lower edge of the depending lug a. Said ad justing-screw N is preferably provided with a milled head 11.', by which it may be readily turned by hand. in the use of said adjusting-screw N the clamping-screw is first turned to loosen the arm A? from its close or bindingr contact with the arm D and `the screw N then turned to bring the tool exactly into thcdesired position or relation to the bottom surface of the supportingplate l). W hen the frame is moved to`the desired position, the clahiping-screw'F is IOC againl tightened to firmly lilold the said arm A2 against the standard.
lt will be understood from the above that the disk A, on which the operative parts of the motor are mounted, together with the' arin I, attached thereto, constitute a rigid rame which carries the motor, the tool-carrying shaft, and the means for driving the said shaftfrom the motor, which frame is pivoted to the base-plate D by the pivotstud E, so that said frame, together 'withthe motor and the tool, may be moved or shifted in effecting vertical adjustment of the tool with respect to the work. The particular construction described by which the plate I is made in a separate pieceI from the body A of the motor is only one of many possible frame .being connected with the base-plate by a horizontal ivot located between the axis Offrotation ci) the motor and the said toolshat, means for rigidly securing said frame 5 to the base-plate, and means for transmitting motion from the -motor to said shaft embrac-- ing belt-pulls s on the rotative part of the lmotor and t e shaftf and a driving-belt v trained over said belt-pulleys. ro` 10. The combination with a base-plate, a motor arranged with its axis of rotation hori-V zontal, a horizontal, rotativel tool-shaft, a vframe on which said motr and said shaft are mounted said frame being pivotA` r 5 ally connected with the base-plate, and
means for adjustably securing/the said frame to the base-plate; the end; of n said frame which carries the said tool-shaft being` extended beyond one end of the base-plate and provided with two lseparated bearingsfor the 2o said tool-shaft. In testimony that I claim the fore my invention I -aiixmy ence of two A. D. 1904.
