ALEXANDER E. OROUSE AND FRANK B. ORTON, OF WOODS COUNTY, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
EVENER AND DOUBLETREE CARRIER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER E. CRoUsE and FRANK B. ORTON, citizens of the United States,-residing in Woods county, Oklahoma Territory, (whose post-office address is Kiowa, Kansas,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Evener and Doubletree Carriers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable lever mechanism for plows, drags, and other agricultural implements by means of which eveners and swingle and double tree carriers to which teams are attached, with or without a pole, may be raised to keep the eveners, trees, and traces from interfering with the horses when the traces are slack in turning and backing.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a wheel-plow, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the lever mechanism detached; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of detached parts thereof.
1 indicates a wheeled low, to which the invention is applied as f0 lows: To the operating-handle lever 2 of the plow, pivoted to the frame 3, is connected by a strap or clamp 4, one end of a rod pivoted thereto, the other end of which is adjustably and pivotally connected by bolt-holes 6 and bolt 7 with the upper end of a lever-arm 8, havng bolt-holes 9. The lower end of the lever-arm 8 terminates in a web or plate 10, formed with the rings or bearings 11 for a pin or shaft 12, coupling it to the frame 3 at its forward end. The web or plate 10 has formed with it a forwardlyeXtending curved arm 13, which constitutes, with the web or plate 10 and lever-arm 8, a bell-crank lever, the whole preferably cast in one piece. WVhile the bell-crank lever is formed with the plate 10, the connection or joint between the lever-arm 8 and arm 13 may be of other suitable construction.
The forward end of the curved arm 13, which may be termed the clamp-arm, terminates in a slotted portion 14, having at its outer end a circular opening 15, in which is mounted a ring 16 with holes 17, engaging pins 18 in the arm 13, thereby permitting the ring 16 to Specification of Letters Patent I Application filed August 9, 1906. Serial No. 329.952.
Patented Dec. 1906- oscillate. Through the ring 16 rojects the upper end of the evener-post 1.9, eld inplace from pulling off by a split lug-pin 20, inserted in the upper end of post 19. The lower portion of post 19 is formed with two spreading-arms 21, terminating in hooks 22, which engage the eyebolts 23, passing through and secured to the evener 24 by nuts 25.
By means of the foregoing-described arrangement of parts and levers on pulling back the handle-lever 2 or releasing it the evener 24, carrying the trees, may be raised or lowered through the intervening rod 5, the bell-crank lever, and the evener-post. The upper end of the evenerost, playing freely in the oscillating ring at t e end of the clamp-arm 13, is adapted to accommodate itself to theuneven movements of the wheeled plow when the horses are moving over uneven ground by either rising and falling or oscillating with the ring 16 in the end of arm 13. In lieu of the specified joint between the arm 13 and the evener-post 19 any other form of joint may be used which will permit of the same movements described of the evenerpost. By means of this invention the evener is held high off the ground in turning at the end of the field, thereby preventing the horses from getting their legs over the traces and getting unhitched. By means of the connection of the evener-post with the clamp-arm the evener-post can have the required play to Y adapt it to rough and hilly country.
Having described the invention, We claim- 1. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners and swingle and double tree carriers of agricultural implements, Which consists of an evener-post carried by the evener, a bellcrank lever connected to the post, a handlelever, and a rod connecting the handle-lever with the bellcrank lever, as herein set forth.
2. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners and swingle and double tree carriers of agricultural implements, which consists in an evener-post having a forked lower end with hooks engaging eyebolts on the evener, a bellcrank lever having a curved clamp-arm with an oscillating ring in its forward end through which loosely projects the upper end of the evener-post, a lever-handle arm, and a rod connecting the lever-handle arm with the bell-crank lever, as herein set forth.
3. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners of agricultural implements, which con sists in an evener-post carried by and having a loose jointed connection at its lower end with an evener, a bell-crank lever having a curved clamp-arm connected with the evenerpost by a joint permitting a vertical and oscillating play of the evener-post, a lever-handle arm, and a rod connecting the lever-handl'e with the bell-crank lever, as herein set forth.
4. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners of agricultural implements, which con.- sists in an evener-post carried by and having a loose-jointed connection at its lower end with an evener, a bell-crank lever cast in one piece and having a plate or web with a clamparm projecting from one side thereof and a vertical lever-arm projecting from the other side thereof, the clamp-arm. having a jointed and sliding connection with the evener-post, whereby the latter can move vertically and oscillate thereon, a handle-lever, and a rod connecting said lever with the vertical arm of the bell-crank lever as herein set forth.
5. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners of agricultural implements, which consists in a handle-lever, an evener-post carried by the evener, and a lever mechanism connecting the handle-lever with the evenerpost,'as herein set forth.
6. An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners of agricultural implements, comprising an implement, an operating-lever therefor, an evener, an evenerpost carried thereby, a bell-crank lever having one of its arms in engagement with said evener-post, and an operating member connecting said operatinglever and the other arm of said bell-crank lever.
7 An adjustable lever mechanism for eveners of agricultural implements, comprising an implement, an operating-lever therefor, an evener, an evener-post carried thereby, a bell-crank lever, one arm of which has a sliding connection with said evener-post and an operating member connecting said operatinglever and the other arm ofsaid bell-crank lever.
In testimony whereof we alliX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
