UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB 1. ORKIN, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO JACOB ISAAOS, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR CLEANING OIL-WASTE.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed April4, 1906. Serial No. 309,839.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J A001; 1. ORKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Oil-lVaste, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus by which oils, grease, gums, and other substances are extracted from cotton and other waste by the application of steam or volatile solvents, the substances when properly extracted being suitable to be used for the same purpose as formerly, and the waste is cleansed and dried for future use.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine of comparably few parts which will be simplicity itself in operation.
The invention consists in the combination of elements and in certain parts of novel construction entailed in the combination of said elements to obtain the desired result.
A full understanding of my invention can best be given by a detailed description of a preferred construction embodying the various features of my invention, and such a de scription will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, and I obtain my object by the mechanism there illustrated, showing such preferred construction, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved apparatus for separating oily substances from waste material and a side elevation of the waste-drier. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my apparatus. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the separator. Fig. 4 is a side sectional view of the drying-pan. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Latitude'is allowed herein as to details, as
- they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The tank 6 represents a cylindrical metal receptacle supported by the legs or standards 7 and supplied with steam from the steam-pipe 8, opening into it near its bottom 9. The tank is provided with the steam-out-' let pipe 10, which has its entrance just below the cover 14 and about diametrically opposite the opening of the steam-pipe 8. A dripcock 12 is provided in the bottom 9 for draining off the ingredients separated from the waste material and for the escape of the water used in washing the waste material, which water is supplied by the service-pipe 13. The tank 6 is provided with a cover 14, having the iron facings 15 and 16 at right angles to each other, extending at their outer ends beyond the rim of the cover 14 and having slots 17 in their outer ends for receiving the screwlugs 18, pivoted to the iron facings 11 of the tank 6 and on which thumb-screws 19 are turned. Within the tank 6 is adapted to be placed a perforated cylindrical pan or can 20, provided with a cover 21, a bottom 22,
having a series of perforations or openings an opening in the center of the cover 21 and through an opening in the center of the bottom 22 and turning upon the bearing 27 on the inner side of the bottom 9 of the tank 6. The shaft 25 is provided with a series of arms 28 for agitating the waste placed within the can 20. The waste to be treated is placed within the pan 20, the covers 21 and 14 and the shaft 25 adjusted, and the shaft set in motion. The turning of this shaft simultaneously turns the arms 28 and the pan 20. Steam is applied through the steam-pipe 8 and passes through the perforations 23 24 into the pan and among the waste material. The oily substances pass from the waste down through the perforations and into the tank 6, where it can be drawn off as desired through the drip-cock 12. If desired, the
ICC
be turned within the pan and agitate the waste material in a more thorough manner.
After steam has been supplied. for a suflicient length of time the steam is shut off, the oily substances are withdrawn, and the tank and pan are partly filled with water from the service-pipe- 13 and the waste throughly washed, after which it is withdrawn and placed Within the tray 31, which tray has downwardly-extending curved arms 37 for holding it upon the coils of the steam-outlet pipe 10, and which pan is provided with the openings 32 in its bottom for the escape of water or other moisture and for the more ready entrance of heat to the waste material which has been placed within the tray to be dried. Extending through this tray is a bar 33, provided with rods 34, having downwardextending prongs 35 to catch the waste material and move it forward and backward within the tray as the bar 33 is carried for-' waste within the tray is agitated by movement of the pulley 26 as the oily waste is agitated within the pan 20. g
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, but that said details may be varied in the practical carrying out of my invention. It is also to be understood that the combinations specifically set forth in the several claims are intended to be separately claimed without limitation to the use in connection therewith of other features and details of construction illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In apparatus for extracting oily substances from waste material, a steam-tank, a pan provided with a perforated bottom within the tank for holding the waste material, arms within the pan, a steam-supply pipe having an opening into the tank below the bottom of the pan, a steamoutlet pipe for the tank having its opening above the bottom of the pan, and means for simultaneously moving the arms and pan, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the class described, a steam-tank, a perforated pan within the tank, a shaft extending through the pan and pivoted on the bottom of the tank, arms carried by the shaft, means for revolving the shaft, means for connecting the shaft and pan whereby the pan may be revolved with the shaft, means for supplying steam to the tank below the bottom of the pan, means for Withdrawing the steam from the tank above the bottom of the pan, a drip-cock for drawing off the oily substances from the tank, and a water-pipe connected with. the tank above the bottom'of the pan for supplying water as the pan is revolved, substantially as shown and described.
3. In apparatus for extracting oily substances from waste material, in combination with a steam-tank of a pan for holding the material and adapted to be rotated within the tank, a water-pipe adapted to supply water to the tank and its pan for washing the material after the application of steam thereto, a steam-pipe connected with the steamtank, and a perforated tray adapted to be supported upon the steam-pipe for drying the Waste after washing, substantially as shown.
4. In a machine of the class described, a perforated tray, arms attached to the tray for supporting the same above a steam-pipe, and means for agitating the contents of the tray, substantially as shown.
5. In a machine of the class described in connection with a coil of steam-pipe of a tray having a perforated bottom, means for supporting the tray upon the coil of pipe and an agitator for the contents of the tray, substantially as shown.
6. In a machine of the class described, a tray provided with a series of openings, means for supporting the tray upon a steampipe with its openings above the pipe, a bar extending through the tray, rods carried by the bar provided with downward-extending prongs and means for moving the bar lengthwise of the tray, substantially as shown.
7. In a machine of the class described, a cylindrical tank, a cover to the tank, a perforated pan within the tank, a central vertical shaft extending into the tank through the pan and having agitator-arms within the pan, means for forcing steam upward through the pan, steam-outlet pipes, a water-supply pipe for forcing water downward through the pan, a faucet in the bottom of the tank for the escape of the water, means for connecting the shaft and pan, rotating means Without the tank and connected to the shaft for revolving the shaft and pan, a tray, means for supporting the tray upon the steam-outlet pipes, an agitator within the tray and operated by the shaft, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB I. ORKIN.
