PATENTED DEG.-11., 1906.

GUSTAVE BADER, OF MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
SEWER-BASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303.457.
Be it known that I, GUsrAvE BADER, a
citizen of the United States, fiesiding in Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful; Improvements in Sewer-Bases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved base for sewers by which a firmer and more stable support for the upper part of the sewer is obtained and the weight of the superimposed brickwork distributed more effec-tively and supported more uniformly on the ground; and for this purpose the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section through my improved sewer-base; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the base of the sewer, taken on line 2 2, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures of the drawinos.
tIteferring to the drawings, a represents the hollow center blocks, and b l) the hollow side blocks, of my improved sewer-base. The center blocks a are preferably provided with a central partition a and a shoulder at the upper part at both sides of the concaved top surface (Z and a shoulder d at the point intermediately between the top and bottom of the center blocks a. The center blocks may be provided with short side partitions which forni with the side walls of the blocks small spaces or channels, and which side walls add to the strength of the center blocks, but which may in smaller and lighter sewers be omitted.
The side blocks l) l) are provided with pro jecting shoulders b at their sides adjacent to the center blocks, so as to 'fit into the shoulders a of the latter and produce thereby, in
connection with said shoulders, a tight closing between the joints of the center andside blocks. The side blocks are provided with straight lower parts which are alined with the bottom of the center blocks, so that thereby the bearing-surface of the sewer-base is enlarged and the thrust of the weight of the brickwork that forms the upper part of the sewer distributed over the ground below, where the sewer is built.
The center blocks, which form the bottom or base of the sewer, are provided in the upper part of their abutting ends with transverse recesses, as shown in Fig. 2, in which is placed a transverse rod 1', of iron or other suitable metal, said rod being embedded in the cement between the joints, so as to form a very effective and tight closing of the joint for the abutting ends of the hollow center blocks. The transverse filling-rods r serve for the purpose of reinforcing the cement joints so as to prevent the washing out of the same and render the joints more permanent, so that leakage of the sewer through the bottoni and side bricks is efl'ectually prevented, and therefore a tighter and stronger sewerbase obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a sewer-base, the combina-tion of the longitudinal center blocks provided with transverse grooves in their upper abutting portions, and transverse reinforcing-rods 1n said grooves embedded in the cement joints between the blocks.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in l presence of two subscribing witnesses.
