Be it known that I, EZEKIEL B. CoLvAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanger and Retainer Devices, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to that general class of devices designed to receive and securely lock up hats, coats, and the like in public places from the depredations of sneak-thieves.

To this end it consists of the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention with the door open and with a hat, coat, and umbrella in dotted lines in position ready for closing the door. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same in line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

As shown in the drawings, 1 is a suitable box or receptacle to readily receive a hat or the like, adapted to be positioned with one of its sides, as 2, to form a floor. The open side of the box is provided with a door 3, preferably vertical when the box is in proper position, hinged to one side, as at 4 4, and rovided on its free edge with a suitable 100 'ng device 5, constructed to cooperate with the opposite side of the box to maintain the door in a closed position.

Within the box, mounted upon the floor 2, near the outer edge thereof, is positioned one or more hangers 6, so positioned that a coat or other garment hung thereon will be impinged upon the outer end of the hanger by the closing of the door 3 thereon-that is to say, the garment will be pinched between the end of the hanger and the door when the latter is closed. To provide for clearance for the folds of the garment, a clearancespace of any desired form is provided between the door when closed and the floor. As shown, a notch, groove, or depression 7 is formed at the free end of the hanger in the floor 2.

If desired, the door may carry means which when the door is closed will extend below a part or the whole of the hook in the same vertical plane, and thus serve to lock the hanger against being forcibly drawn downward to clear the lower edge of the door, and thus permit the removal of the garment. Such means may consist. of bosses or fingers 9, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) which press against the garment and lie between the side arms of the hook 6 below the loop of the hook, or equivalent means may be employed for the same purpose.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the kind described, comprising a box having an open side, and a side adjacent said opening, adapted to serve as the bottom of the box, provided with a notch at said opening, in combination with a hanger mounted within the box and overhanging said notch, and a door to close the open side of the box, and adapted when closed'to clamp a garment between the free end of the hanger and a portion of said door, and means for holding said door closed.
