Description

APATEEVIED NOV. 27, 1906.
M. J. FERREN.
i FURNAGE ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED ulm, 1906.
5mm/Wto@ @XMIM/moco MYRON J. FERREN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FURNACE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
Application filed January 3. 1906. Serial Non 2945343.
To 1J/Z 'uf/1,07% it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, MYRON J. FERREN, a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for furnaces, more paticularly the ordinary furnace used in heating systems installed in dwellings, and its object is to provide a device intended to be placed in coperative connection with a furnace when ashes are to be drawn from the ash-pit thereof for causing any fumes, gases, dust, or the like which may tend to rise and intermingle with the surrounding atmosphere as the ashes are drawn and deposited in a receiving-receptacle, as a pan or scuttle, to pass into the path of the draft caused by the smoke-fine of the furnace-as, for instance, by passing into the fire-box of the furnace.
The invention includes an attachment which is particularly simple in construction shows the attachment in coperative relation to a furnace, but a fragment on the latter being shown conventionally. Eig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment.
In the accompanying drawings a fragment of a hot-air furnace is shown conventionally and is designated by A, and one embodiment of my attachment is shown in coperative relation thereto at B.
The illustrated embodiment of lthe attachment comprises a substantially rectangular casing or body a, provided with a lateral discharge-opening b and with substantially alining openings c d in its front and rear walls, respectively. The opening b is located at the end of an offset portion or laterally-extending branch e, which is preferably of such size and contour as to snugly fit the walls of the firedoor opening of the furnace.- The openings c d are located in such relation to the branch e that when the latter is in place in the opening f such opening c d will register with the door-opening g of the ash-pit.
The pan or like receptacle h, into which the ashes shoveled from the ash-pit is deposited, rests within the lower part of the attachment or occupies a position beneath the flue formed by the body a, so that the gases, dust, and the like arising by shoveling the ashes from the ash-pit into the receptacle will pass up through said flue into the fire-chamber of the stove and out through the ordinary smoke-fine. It will be understood, of course, that the damper on the smokeeflue will be opened to the full eXtent before the ashes are drawn toinsure a good draft through the attachment.
The construction and operation of the invention will be full-y understood from the foregoing description, and it will be appreciated that varying changes may be made from the illustrated form of the invention without de arting from the spirit and scope thereof.
I claim-,
1. The combination with a furnace havingv a door-opening leading into the fire-chamber, and a second door-opening beneath the first leading into the ash-pit, of a portable casing having a passage-way leading from its upper portion designed to register with the fire-door opening and discharge thereinto and having additional openings in its lower portion in its front and rear walls designed to register with the ash-pit opening, substantially as described. i
2. A furnace attachment comprising a light portable casing normally out of connection with the furnace and intended to be placed into coperative relation therewith when ashes are to be drawn from the ash-pit of the furnace, said casing having an offset portion at its upper end, designed to fit within the door-opening ofthe fire-chamber of the furnace and having openings in its front and rear wallsregistering with the door-opening leading into the ash-pit of the furnace whereby a receptacle may be placed in front of the furnace within the casing and ashes withdrawn from the ash-pit and dumped there- IOO IOS
into and whereby the dust and fumes arising l testing witnesses, at Washington, District of from the ashes so Withdrawn will pass upt Columbia, this 30th day of December, 1905. wardly throucfh said Casin@ into the fire- T T Chamber of thbe furnace, suistantially as de- MYROB J' FERRER scribed. /Vitnesses:
In testimony whereof I have hereunto HENRY E. COOPER, signed my name, in the presence of two at- I GERTRUDE RODERIOK.
