Description

niiet tant WILLIAM' S. COLWELL, OI' ALLEGIIENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Leners'Betem-Na. 83,466, deed comme@ 186s.
vIMIPRO'V'Elli/[IElIli IIN' STAVE-MACHINES. l
The Schedule referred to in these .Letteral Patent and-making part of the me,-
that the following is a full, clear, and exact description' thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draws ings, and tothe letters and figures of reference marked thereon. 4, The nature of my invention consists-in-:providing the ram of stave-machines-with a rack, and com` bining therewithV a series of wheels, for imparting tol said ram a reciprocating motion, the Whole'be'ing constructed, arranged, and operatingin 'the'.,lnanner hereinafter described. 1J
'rol enable4 others sinnedin the art of eensheeting stave-machines to make and use my improvement, I will proceed toI describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which' form part of my speciii'cation Figure l is a top view of my improvement in rams for stave-machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation ,of the same.
In the drawings, A represents the frame, connected with the ram.
The ram B is made in any of the known forms, and is provided with a T-head, D, which moves in slides G.
To the back part of the ram vB is secured Aa rack, marked e, which is provided with a detachable and an adjustable tooth, x.
Into the rack e gear two wheels, f and i, the wheel fi having teeth on only'part of its periphery.
On the shaft 2, above Wheel f, is a wheel, g, which .gears into the wheel h, which has teeth on only part of its periphery, and is placedabove the iwheel t', on shaft 3.
The tooth of the rack eis made detachable and adjustable, for the purpose of adjusting said tooth to the gear of wheels h and i, and for removing said tooth 'when it becomes worn out, said tooth being subjected to the greatest wear and friction.
The stop 'n is used-for thepnrpo'se of preventing the ram from being thrown too far forward, and thus placing wheels and rack e out'of proper gear.
'As the construction and arrangement of the several parts will be clearly seen byrefercnceto .theaccoml panying' drawings, I will, without 4fnrtliendescription of theirconstruction, proceed to describe the. operation, which is as follows: By turning the shaft 3, the wheel hwill revolve the wheel g, and shaft 2 and wheel f, which will move forward ram B, until the teeth of 'the wheel h pass outof gear with the teeth of wheel g. By this time, the teeth of wheel i will come into gear with the' teeth of the rack e, and will force back the ram B. `By this time, the teethiofwheel h will come into gear withwheel g, which will revolve it, and
the shaft 2 and wheel f, which will again movethe ram forward. And thus will the wheels, in connection with the rack, continue to impart a reciprocating motion to the rain, without the use of cords, weight, or spring, which are now used for drawing back the ram. Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention is` Y Y The combination of the wheels f, g, 71 and t', with the rack'e, for imparting a reciprocating motion to the `rain B, substantially as herein described and set forth.
