To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, EDWARD A. DOTY, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Instrument- Holding Appliances ;;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use ,the same.

My invention relates to a pocket attachment for holding rules, pencils, and the like so that the same will not accidentally fall from the ocket.

A still ther object is to provide an attachment of this character which practically fills the mouth of the pocket, so that a rule or pencil can be very readily placed therein.

A great trouble heretofore experienced by carpenters, roofers, and other mechanics has been the fact that when stoo in over rules, &c., within their pockets wil fal therefrom, and considerable delag is therefore experienced in picking up-t e instrument, which oftentimes falls a considerable distance.

The object of my invention is to provide a very simple form of attachment which can be very readily connectedto a pocket and into which a rule, &c., can be easily inserted and will. be firmly retained.

The invention consists of a rectangular casing formed of sheet metal and having converg' ton ues extending downwardl from its .wa ls. he entire casing is line With leather ,or other flexible material which is fastened to the casing and has flaps adapted to be securedby buttons or other preferred means to the garment at points adjacent the pocket. The entire device is adapted to be slip ed into a pocket and fastened in place an when so disposed practically fills the entire mouth thereof.

The invention also consists of the further novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereof will vice is fastened. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section therethrough, showing a rule in position therein. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the casing minus its min and Fi 4 is a view, -on a reduced scale, 0 the blan from which the casingis formed.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a rectangular casing, referably oblon from side to side and ormed shown in ig. 4. Each wal of the casing has a downwardly-extending tapered tongue 2, and all of the tongues converge toward the lon tudinal axis of the casing, as shown partieu arly in Figs. 2 and 3. Another tongue 3 extends upward from the back wall of the casing and 1s for a purpose hereinafter more full described. h

xtending through the casing is a lininlg 4, formed of leather or other soft materia and this lining is open at the bottom and extends a short distance below the tongues 2, as shown at 5, Fig. 2.' -Triangular flaps 6 and 7 are formed at the other end of the lining and are so disposed that one of the flaps 6 can overlap the edge of a pocket 8, while the other flap can extend upward and overlap the tongue 3. Both of the flaps 6 and 7 have buttonholes 9, adapted to receive buttons 10, extending from the-pocket 8 and from the arment 11 at a point above the pocket. The lining 4 may be fastened to the casing in any preferred manner, preferably by means of rivets 12.

Where an attachment of the character described is to be em loyed, the same is inserted into a ocket, and the tongue 3 will extend u war therefrom against the garment 11. F ap 6 is then folded over the pocket and secured to button 10, while flap 7 is placed in enga ement with the upper button 10. The attac ment is thus securely held against displacement, and by forcing a rule, pencil, or other device down into the attachment and between the converging to ues thereof the same will be clamped u on%) and held against accidental displacement.
