To all wlpom it may concern:
Be it known that we,:JAMEs DUNN and FRANK H. JENNINcs, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful'I-Iinge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges, more particularly to the hinges operating to automatically close doors, shutters, and similar devices to which they are attached, and has for its object to produce a simply-constructed device of this aracter of increased efliciency, durability, and utility.
With these and other objects in view,whici will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable ofcarrying the same into practical operation.
The improved device is more articularly a plicable to the lar er class of doors and s utters of a fireproo character and for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional form of a structure of this character.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a ortion of a shutter and the adjacent walls 0 a building with one of the improved hinges applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shutter and one of the improved hinges with the wall of the building above the shutter in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are erspective views of the two leaf portions oftiie improved hinge detached. Fig. 5 is a view of the fusible locking-rod detached.
- The shutter is indicated at 10, of any approved material, but preferably of fireproof material, arranged over the usual opening in the wall 11.
The improved hinge consists oftwo leaves having a pintle upon one leaf and a pintlesocket upon the other leaf, the socket-leaf represented at 12 and the pintle-supporting leaf represented at 13, the leaf 13 being attached to the shutter, as by screws 14, and the leaf 12 attached to the walls 11, as by screws 15. The pintle is connected at 17 to the leaf 13 and operating through the socket 18 onv the leaf 12. The leaves 12 13 are preferably formed from plates of metal, with the pintle-- other and perforated to receive the ends of a' compound curved rod 21, the rod forming a track for a bearing-wheel 22, supported in ears 23 24 on the leaf 13. The track 21 is in semicircular form on a horizontal plane, as shown in Fig.2, and inclined upwardly from the member to the member 19, so that as the shutter 10 is opened the roller 22 in riding upon the track will carry the shutter upward with it, and when released the gravity of the shutter will cause the same to automatically close, as will be obvious. The track is formed from a round rod, preferably of steel, and thus presents a round surface constantly to the roller 22, so that no material will gather upon the track to obstruct it. Thus in the winter-time if snow or ice should gather upon the track the first time the shutter is opened or closed the roller would quickly break the ice or snow loose from the track, which would fall therefrom, so that the presence of the ice or snow would not prevent the action of the device or clog the same.
The parts are simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and applied to the various sizes of shutters and doors in use. ter is an eye 25, and attached to the wall 11 preferably within the opening covered by the shutter, is an eye 26, and looped into the eye 25 is a rod 27, and detachably hooked at 28 into the e e 26 is another rod 29, the free ends of the ro s being coupled into a fusible plu or collar 30. The rods 27 29 are thus coupled rigidly and form a stay to hold the shutter in open position, and in event of a fire the heat radiating therefrom will fuse the plug 30, and thus release the shutter, which will immediately close automatically by runnin down the inclined track 21, as before descri ed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claime as new is 1. In an apparatus of the class described, a structure having an opening, a closure to said opening, a hinge member having spaced lat- Attached to the inner face of the shuteral offsets and a pintle-socket, an inclined track connected at the ends respectively in said ofi'sets, a hinge member connected to said closure and provided with a pintle engaging said pintle-socket and a bearing engaglng hinge member connected to said closure and provided With a pintle engaging said socket and With bearings engagin said tracks.
