- This invention relates to what are known as fare-registers, primarily designed for use on street-cars and like public conveyances; and it relates, primarily, to that class of such registers in which provision is made for printing the indications of the register, including the indication of its direction sign or indicator and for preserving a record of the same which is accessible to the proper o-fficers, but not to the conductor, who is required to register the fares and otherwise to operate the register according to rule, including the operation of its printing device and the resetting of its trip-register numeralwheels or equivalent trip-counters to Zero at the end of each trip or at other predetermined times.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. GIERDING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fare-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what are known as fare-registers, primarily designed for use on street-cars and like public conveyances; and it relates, primarily, to that class of such registers in which provision is made for printing the indications of the register, including the indication of its direction sign or indicator and for preserving a record of the same which is accessible to the proper o-fficers, but not to the conductor, who is required to register the fares and otherwise to operate the register according to rule, including the operation of its printing device and the resetting of its trip-register numeralwheels or equivalent trip-counters to Zero at the end of each trip or at other predetermined times.
The leading object of the present invention is to put the operation of the tripindication-printing device under the control of the trip-counter-resetting means, so that the printing device cannot be shifted without resetting the trip-counter to zero if there have v been any registrations since the previous re setting operation, while provision is at the same time made for operating the impres sion-taking device and resetting the tripcounter as often as may be desired without 1 shifting the printing device, or, in other words, as often as may be desired during each trip, this being required on roads operated on what is called the zone system, where there are several fare limits between termini.
Another object of the invention is to render the operation of the direction-indicator subject to the control of the resetting mechanism notwithstanding the adaptation of the latter to be operated independently, so that the direction-sign can only be changed during a resetting operation.
Another object is to indicate to the conductor the moment during whichthe direction-indicator and the trip-indication-printing device may be shifted to expose a different direction-sign and to correspondingly shift the printing device.

The improved fare-register may be of any approved external ap earance. in which it is shown in the drawingsits external characteristics (represented in Figs. 1
In the form and 2) include a circular casing having a back part a, of cast-iron, a removable front part b, of sheet metal, and a circular glass front plate 0 and a dial-plate d, exposed to view by said front plate and provided with indexholes 6, f, and g, which expose to view, re-
spectively, a set of trip-counter numeralwheels 6, a set of totalizer numeral-wheels f, and the direction sign or indicator 9. actuation-indicator h, Figs. 3 and 8,,is also exposed to view through said index-holefdin front of the units-wheel of said trip-counter numeral wheels 0 during each registering operation, and a not-set flag or indicator "L, Figs. 3 and 8, is exposed to view through the same index-hole during each resetting operation.
An inconspicuous sight-hole 1', Fig. 1, in the dial-plate cl for the benefit of the conductor, exposes to view an indicator-spot j, Fig. 8, of a contrasting color on a movable part behind the same when the tripcount erresetting operation has progressed to a sufficient extent to unlock the direction-indicator g and the trip-indicatien-printing device 7c. Other external characteristics of the register include a rearwardly-projecting stud Z, Figs. 2, 4, and 5, forming part of the actuating mechanism by which the registration of fares is effected, and the bell m, Figs. 3 and 8, within the register-casing is rung to attest the registration of each fare, a protruding knob or attached key a, by which the resetting operation is effected and the printing device hereinafter described is operated, a normally locked door 0 affording access to the removable record-drum 0 of the printing device, and a protruding handle 1), by which the direction-indicator g printing device is are shifted under the control of the resetting means, as hereinafter set forth.
The internal mechanism will now be more particularly described, as illustrated by Figs. 3. to 8 inclusive, which see. Each time the register is pulled through the medium of said rearwardly-protruding stud Z motion is simultaneously transmitted from the latter to the units-wheels of the trip-counter wheels 0 and the totalizer-wheelsf and to the unitswheel of a set of number-printing wheels 7c, associated with the printing device 7c. The actuation-indicator h is simultaneously moved into its effective position, and at the end of the registering operation the bellhammer m, Figs. 3 and S, is actuated to ring the bell m. The specific devices represented in the drawings, by which these several operations are effected, are or may be identical with those more particularly described in my specification forming part of an application for United States Letters Patent filed the 13th day of January, 1906, Serial No. 295,932, and as their details form no part of the present invention further description thereof is omitted from the present specification. At the end of each trip or travel in a given direction, or as often as may be desired, the tripcounter numeral-wheels e are reset to zero by pulling and turning the key a, and therewith a horizontal shaft n upon which said trip-counter numeral-wheels rotate in the registering operation, by means of which motion is transmitted to the several wheels in the resetting operation and the protruding ends of which support, respectively, the bell m and the record-drum 0. The devices represented in the drawings by which said tripcounter numeral-Wheels e are thus reset to zero and by which the resetting movements of said shaft are controlled, together with the means for actuating said not-set indicator t, and for simultaneously locking the mechanism against registering operations by means of a bolt q, Figs. 3 and 8, are or may be likewise identical with these described and referred to in said specification forming part of said application for patent, Serial No. 295,932, and their details form no part of the present invention. Immediately preceding the completion of each resetting operation motion is transmitted by a cam 7" on said shaft a through a yoke 1" embracing the same to a slidable frame 5, in which said printing-wheels 7c are mounted, on a shaft 7c", that is geared to the units-wheel. shaft f of said tetalizer-wheels f, shown in Figs. 3 and S, and which also carries the trip-indica tien-printing device 76 in the form of a type block fast on said shaft 7J2, this shaft being loose within all the printing-wheels is and extending theretl'irough to a butterfly-cam i, exposed to View in Figs. 6 and S. Said printing device 7c has two printing-surfaces l and 2, Figs. 4 and 5, one of which is adapted to print one of the indications or signs of the direction-indicator g and the other is preferably adapted to print the number of the individual-fare register, or a like arbitrary indication or symbol identifying the record with the particular register, or with the conductor in charge of the same. After taking an impression from one or the other of said printing-surfaces l and 2 of the printing device k', in the position in which the surface 1. is shown in Fig. 4 and in full lines in Fig. 5 and from the characters in line therewith on the printing-wheels 7c, the printing-frame s is restored to its original position by a retracting-spring s, Fig. 3, under the control of said cam 1'. Motion is then transmitted to the record-drum 0 from said shaft a through spur gearing u, a Geneva step movement 1), Figs. 4 and 5, and spur-gearing w, connecting the star-wheel 3* of the step movement with the drum 0, so as to shift the record-sheet carried upon its periphery preparatory to the next printing operation, and the resetting of the trip-counter numeralwheels 6 is then completed and the movable parts of the resetting device automatically restored to the positions they occupy during the registering operation, as in Figs. 3 and 4.
The resetting operation and printing operation, as above described, do not affect the position of the direction-indicator g or of the printing device 7c; but the operation of these parts is controlled by the resetting operation and can only be effected during the resetting operation, as will now appear. The face-plate of said stop'movernent is constructed with a pair of concentric peripheral locking- surfaces 3 and 3, Figs. 4 and 5, and a pair of peripheral notches 4 and 4E alternating therewith or following the respective locking-surfaces, the same being duplicated, because this part in the construction shown makes only one-half a revolution during each resetting operation. During the registering operations when the resetting and printing mechanisms are at rest one or the other of said locking- surfaces 3 and 3 is in contact with a stud 5 on a swin ing lever ac, which has its pivot 6 near the back of the register and carries another stud.7 at its free end, which contacts with one or the other of a pair of detent-surfaces8 and 8 on a cam 1 which is fast on the protruding near end of the rock-shaft g of the direction-indicator g and is held in contact with one or the other of said surfaces 8 and 8" by a retractingspring y, stretched from said lever y to a stud 9 on the adjacent frame-piece .2, the relation of these parts being such that the direction-indicator g and prii'iting device k, being movable together, cannot be shifted to change the direction-sign and to correspond ingly set the printing device while said stud 5 is in contact with either of said locking surfaces 3 and 3. At a given point in each resetting operation, preferably immediately after the retraction of the printingframe s after taking an impression, one or the other of said notches 4 and 4 is brought opposite said stud 5, as in Fig. 5, and the directionindicator 9 and printing device it are then free to be operated in the manner illustrated by this figure.
' Motion is imparted to the direction indicator g and printing device 1c to change the direction-sign and to bring the appropriate surface 1 or 2 of the printing device into effective position by the external handle p, which is so located as to be accessible to the conductor and connected with a pitman 10, extending downwardly from a Wrist-pin 10 on said cam y on the direction-indicator rock-shaft g to the vicinity of'said butterflycam 15 on the shaft k of said printing device k and the printing-wheels k, where it is provided with a stud 11, contacting with said butterfly-cam t, as in Figs. 6 and 8. In this manner motion may be transmitted to the direction-indicator g and printing device is at will during that period of the resetting operation when they are so unlocked, but only during this period, and the direction-indicator and printing device are not otherwise affected by the resetting and printing operations, which may consequently take place as often as may be desired during a given trip or direction of travel. The simplest form of said external handle 19 is that of a depending knob with its stem attached to a rigid arm 12 of the pitman p, as indicated in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive. An objection to this form is that'it exposes the shifting devices to disarrangement by violence if the conductor is so disposed when the direction-indicator g and printing device is are locked. Such violence may be prevented, as illustrated by Figs. 9 and 10, by substituting for said depending handle 2) and rigid arm 12 a laterally-projecting rock-shaft 29 having a key end external to the registercasing and connected by a slotted lever-arm 12 with the pitman 19. With either form of such external handle 1) the conductor can readily manipulate the resetting and rinting mechanisms by his right hand applied to the key n and at the same time operate the directionindicator 9 and printing deivce 7c by his left hand.
The indicator-spot 7', Fig. 8, for indicating to the conductor the moment during which the direction-indicator g and printing device is may be shifted, is preferably and conveniently located on the bell m, so as to be exposed to view through said sight-hole y" when the. resettingkey n and shaft n have been turned to a suflicient extent to unlock the controlling-lever as, or, in other words, to the extent indicated in Figs. 5 and 8. As the bell m is carried by said shaft n and rotates therewith, it affords a convenient background for an indicating-spot of contrasting color exposed to view through a sight-hole in the dial-plate, as above described, and the addition of another part for this purpose is thus obviated.
The locking and unlocking device may obviously have only.one locking-surface (3' or 3") and one freeing-notch (4 or 4) or more than two of each, according to the number of its rotations during each resetting operation, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification 1. A fare-register having, in combination, a fare-counter, a set of number-printing wheels, means for actuating said fare-counter and said printing-wheels, a trip-indication printing device, means for taking impressions from said printing-wheels and said printing device at will, means distinct from the impression-taking means for shifting said printing device by hand at the end of each trip, and means distinct from the shifting means for controlling such shifting operation.
2. A fare-register having, in combination, a farecounter,- a set of number-printing wheels, means for actuating said fare-counter and said printing-wheels, a tripindication printing device, means for taking impressions from said printing-wheels and said printing device at will, means distinct from'the impression-taking means for shifting said printing device by hand at the end of each trip, and means distinct from the shifting means for confining such shifting operation to a limited period after a printing operation is completed.

A fareregister having, in combination, a trip-counter adapted to be reset to zero at will, a totalizer, a set of number-printing wheels, means for actuating said trip-counter totalizer and printing wheels, means for resetting said trip -.counter including a rotatable key, a trip-indieation-printing device, means for taking impressions from said printing-wheel and said printing device at each trip counter resetting operation, a stop movement actuated by said key, means distinct from the resetting means for shifting said printing device by hand at the end elf each trip, and means for preventing such shifting operation when said resetting means is at rest, such preventing means including a peripherally-notched disk forming part of said stop movement and a part movable with said stiffening means interacting with said disk and movable only when a peripheral notch is moved into coincidence therewith.
55. The combination, in a fare-register, of a tripindication-printing device, means for manually shifting said printing device at the end of each trip and means for controlling such shifting operation including a movable part having a locking-surface and a notch, means for moving said part, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said locking surface and said notch and a cam movable with said shifting device and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and said locking-surface are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when said notch is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
56. The combination, in a fare-register, of a trip-indieation-printing device, means for manually shifting said printing device at the end. of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a rotatable disk having a peripheral locking-surface and a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud to interact with said locking-surface and said notch. and a cam movable with the shifting device and adapted .to interact with said lever, the con struction of these parts being such that when said stud and said lockin -surtaceare in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when said notch is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
57. The combination, in a fare-register, of a trip-indication-printing device, means for manually shifting said printing device at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a rotatable disk having peripheral locking-surfaces each followed by a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said lockingsurfaces and said notches and a cam movable with said shifting device and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and either of said locking-surfaces are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when either of said notches is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
58. The combination, in a fare-register, of a direction-indicator, means for manually shifting the same at the end of each trip and means for controlling such shifting operation including a movable part having a lockingsur'i'ace and a notch, means for moving said part, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said locking-surface and said notch and a cam. movable with said direction indicator and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction. of these parts being such that when said stud and locking-surface are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when said notch is moved. into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
59. The combination, in a fare-register, of a direction-indicator, means for manually shifting the same at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a rotatable disk having a peripheral locking-surface and a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said lockingsurface and said notch and a cam movable with said direction-indicator and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and said locking-surface are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when said notch is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
60. The combination, in a fare-register, of a direction-indicator movable on a horizontal rock-shaft, means for manually shifting said direction-indicator at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a rotatable disk having peripheral locking-surfaces each followed by a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said locking-surfaces and said notches and a cam movable with said rockshaft and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and either of said locking-surfaces are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when either of said notches is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
61. The combmatiomin a fare-register, of a direction-indicator, a trip-indication printing device, means for manually shifting said direction-indicator and said printing device at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a movable part having a locking-surface and a notch, means for moving said part, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said locking-surface and said notch, and a cam movable with said direction-indicator and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and said locking-surface are in contact said lever is locked against movement a direction-indicator and a trip-indicationprinting device, means for manually shifting said direction-indicator and said printing device at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation including a rotatable disk having a peripheral-locking surface and a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with said locking-surface and said notch, and a cam movable with said direction-indicator and adapted to interact with said lever, the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and said locking-surface are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when said notch is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation.
63. The combination, in a fare-register, of a direction-indicator, a trip-indication-printing device, means for manually shifting said direction-indicator and said printing device at the end of each trip, and means for controlling such shifting operation-including a rotatable disk having peripheral locking-surfaces each followed by a peripheral notch, means for rotating said disk, a lever carrying a stud arranged to interact with saidlockingsurfaces and said notches and a cam movable with said direction-indicator and adapted to interact with said lever; the construction of these parts being such that when said stud and either of said locking-surfaces are in contact said lever is locked against movement by said cam and when either of said notches is moved into coincidence with said stud said lever is unlocked for the shifting operation, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
