The other set of upper cutters at this time is above the up er reversing shaft and comprises four d1s s, which are adapted to coperatie with the set of four lower cutting-disks upon rotating the reversing frames half a turn, whereby the web is trimmed off at its side edges and divided into three strips or bands.
EachY of the reversing shafts and the sup porting-arms at opposite ends thereof lform a rotary reversing frame which carries two sets of rotating cutters on o posite sides of its center, each set being a apted for cooperation with/the corresponding set of cutters upon the other frame upon turning both frames into the position to bring the companion cutters into operative relation. While the two companion sets of cutters of the two reversing frames are in their operative position for cutting the web into strips of certain sizes, the companion cutters on the other cutter-shafts are in an inoperative position and free to be adjusted for cutting the web into str ips of different widtlis. In order to change the cutting the web from one size to another, it is ther re only necessary to turn both frames so s to move the companion operative cutters out of the working position and the companion inoperative cutters into the working position.
1t has been found desirable to effect the trimming of the edge of the web by engaging the upper marginal cutters d dz with the outer side of the lower marginal cutters c c2 in order to throw thewaste which is removed downwardly, and thereby prevent the same from passing on to the following mechanism and interfering with the operation thereof. It is immaterial, however, on which side the intermediate lower cutters c" are engaged by the upper cutters df; but in the drawinvs these intermediate cutters are engaged reilatively to each other, the same as the cooperating cutters c d, which trim the left edge of the web.
In setting the companion sets of cutters of both frames for producing a trimming or division of the web along certain predetermined lines the lower cutting-disks of the respective set are first ad justcd alon r their res ective shaft until their cutting e ges are in tiic desired position. i Each of the upper sets of cutters is then adjusted for properly coperating with its `companion lower set of cutters by the folldwing means. represents thi,l hubs of the upper cutters d d, which are mounted on their res ective shafts and operatively connected tiierewith by means of splines e, so as to compel the same to turn with their shafts, but ermit the cutters to be adjusted len thwise t ereof. Each of these cutters is held with its hub yieldingly against its respective stop-collar by means of a s ring G, interposed between the front side of he cutter-hub, and another stop-collar g, adjustabiy secured to the respective shaft by means of a set-screw g or otherwise. Each of the u per cuttershafts isiadjustable axially, together with the cutters dd, mounted thereon, by means of a horizontal adjusting-shaft H, journaled in bearings on the ad'acent arms of the reversing frame, but hel against axial movement therein, right and left screw-threads H H2, arranged on o posite ends of said adjustingsha t, a han wheel h, secured to one end of said screw-sh aft for turning the same', a screwnut L, working on the thread at the left end of the shaft, and a coupling-finger hz, projecting laterallyfrom the screw-nut h into the 9 groove i of a collar l, secured to the left end of the adjacent cutter-shaft. Tilting of this screw-nut is prevented by means of a guidefoot i', projecting laterally from the opposite side of the nut and sliding lengthwise on the surface of the adjacent reversing shaft. Each of the upper right-end cutter-hubs is mounted on its respective shaft by means of a spline y', which compels this cutter to turn with its shaft, but permits the same to move lengthwise thereon. K represents rrooved coupling-collars which are arranged on the upper cuttershafts on the right-hand cutter-hubs and which are connected by splines k to said shaft. Various means may he provided for rotating the cutter-shafts in the directinin for moving their opposing portions in the same direction in which the web of paper moves which is being severed when these critters are in their working position. 'lhe )referred means for this purpose shown in tlie drawings are constructor as follows: 'l represents gear-wheels arranged on the correspomling ends of the several cutter-shafts. U )on turning these frames so that two of their companion sets of cutters are in a Working position the peripheries of the gear-wheels which are mounted on the respective cuttershafts interrnesh and cause these cutters to rotate in unison. Upon turning these frames so that the companion sets of cutters are not in a working position their companion gearwheels are disengaged, so that th'e rota-tion of these cutters is arrested. Motion is trans-- mitted to the operative cutters by means of a pinion f engaging the gear-wheel of one of the cutter-s nifts of a set of cutters while in its operative position. As shown in Fin. l, this pinion engages with the lower side o? the gear-wheel on the shaft of the lower set of cutters while the saine is in working position. This pinion secured to a horizontal drivingshaft u, which is journaled in the adjacent part of the frame and driven by a belt passing around a sprocket-wheel u on the driving-shaft or by any other suitable means. Each of' the eea r-whcels of the lower shafts is engaged witi this driving-pinion as the respective lower set of cutters is moved into its o erative position, but is again disengaged t erefrom when this set of cutters is moved out of its operative position.
ln order to prevent injury to the gearwheels T if the teeth of the companion pair should engage cach other end to end upon reaching their operative position, means-are provided for permitting. one of the cuttershafts to yield until these gear-wheels during their continued rotation drop into proper mesh. For this purpose each of the up er cutter-shafts has its right-end bearing ll), which is next to the driving gear-wheel T, so mounted that it is movable radially on the reversing frame, while the .bearing l)2 at the opposite end of said shaft 1s swiveled on the adjacent art of the reversing frame. In order to hold the upper cutter-shafts rigidly in their working position after the driving gear-Wheel of each of these shafts is in. en agement with its companion lower gear-w el the following means are provided, which'are best shown in Figs. 1 and 4. z :c represent two movable latches, which are pivoted at their inner ends on the adjacent supporting-arms of the upper rotary frame, in which the radially-movable bearings are uidcd. Each of these latches is movable aterally with its free outer end into and out of enga ement with an adjustable abutment or shou der x on the outer end of the adjacent radially-movable bearing, said abutf ment preferably consisting of a screw. A paper-slltter comprising two rotarlyv frames pivoted on opposite sides of the pat of the web to be cut, cutter-shafts'journaled on each of said frames on opposite sides of its pivot and parallel therewith, cutters mounted on each of said cutter-shafts, gear- Wheels mounted on said cutter-shafts, and the gear-wheels of the companion shafts of both frames being movable into and out of engagement upon rotating said frames, and a driving ear-wheel arranged to be englaged by one o each pair of companion gear-w .eels upon turning said frame into an operative posil ion, substantially as set forth.
