Be it known that I, GEORGE B. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs for Folding Stools; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a. full, clear, and exact description thereof. K

The object of my invention is to provide a folding or collapsible stool with a hinged back that may be folded over the seat of the stool when swung down and serve in this position as a brace for the legs of said stool.

Another object is to provide means for locking the back to the legs of the stool when it is swung up,'said back being rigidly held in this positio In view of the foregoing said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a vertical section view of a folding stool embodying my invention; and Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same, indicated by line 2 2 in Referring by letter to the drawings, A A indicate the legs of the stool, provided with upper cross-bars a a, respectively, and lower cross-bars b b. The cross-bars, together with the leg members A A, form rectangular loops that are pivoted together at their enlarged central portions 0 c, the cross-bars a a being connected by a flexible seat D to complete an ordinary folding stool. The back-frame is preferably composed of a single piece of metal bent in a rectangular form to provide side bars E and upper and lower cross-bars d (1, said frame being of such width as to straddle the outside legs A of the stool to which it is hinged just below the cross-bar a by pivots F, passing through the said legs and side bars E of the back-frame. The hinge-joints are located just above the cross-bar d of the back-frame, and this bar impinges against the back of the legs A when said back-frame is swun up for use, and torigidly secure the justably mounted upon said cross-bar. The dog has a nose 6, that straddles one of the legs A, the latter being then held between the back-frame bar (1 and said nose to prevent the back from moving in either direction on its pivots. The stool'when used with the ack is desirable for children, and when said back is folded u on the seat it may be used as a third seat for a vehicle When employed as a third seat, the device is subjected to greater strain than when used asa childs chair, and consequently the increased strength obtained by the employment of the back-frame as a brace for the stool-legs is an important feature of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is

In a collapsible stool .comprising intersecting legs pivoted together, upper and lower cross-bars for said legs, a flexible seat connecting the upper cross-bars, and a rectan ular back-frame having side bars connected y upper and lower cross-bars, pivots supported in a pair of the stool-legs near the upper ends of same and in the side bars of the frame near the lower cross-bar of said frame, and a longitudinally-adjustable locking-dog mounted upon said lower cross-bar of the frame ,wherelay the latter is secured to one of the stool- 2.
