Be it known that I, AUsUsTUs Da ,of Detroit, inthe county of Wayne, and State cf Michigan, have kinvented a new and useful Improvement in a Winch; and I do declare thatthelfollowing is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon, and being a part of this speciication.
The nature of this invention consists in constructing a winch, provided with proper; ratchet-wheels, pawls, and dogs, and levers', with friction-bands, to operate and control the motions of the apparatus. l
This winch, as shown in thedrawings, is intended for use on board vessels,A for handling the centre-'boards. It can be adapted to raising and lowering boats, and a large variety of uses, which it is needless to enumerate. I will describe the apparatuses shown in the drawings,.premising that but slight modifications are required to adapt it for handling anchors, boats, and almost any general purpose of hoisting o lowering weights'. A is a suitable frame to sustain the apparatus, intothe two ends of which is properly journalled the'solid cylinder B, upon the journals of which are loosely sleeved the sockets C, into which are inserted'the handles D. These sockets are sleeved between -the ends of the solid cylinder and the vends of the frame. Cast ,upon or rigidly attached to the solid cylinder, are the ratchets E, which are operated by the pawls-F, pivoted to the sockets C, from' 'which they derive their motion. G are frictiombands, one end of which is'secured to` the rear or short ends of the pawls, thence passing downwards and around-the periphery of the ends of the cylinder B, outside of and between the ratchets E and sockets 0,' to a rod extending across the frame. H are dogs, rigidly attached to a similar rod, I, to which is' also attached a counterpoise, J. The red lines show the positionoi the dogs and counterpoise when not in use# Klis the chain leading from the winch to. the article to be operated upon. The handles or levers' D are operated alternately, compelling the pawls F to engage with the ratchets E, while the dogs H hold all that has been gained. I'n lowering any weight, throw both the levers D forward, after dislengaging' the dogs H, (which will then assume the position shown in red lines.) By thus throwing forward the levers D, the friction-bands are brought into contact with the peripheryof the cylinder B, thereby enabling the operator to control the velocity ofthe descent.
What I claim as myzinvention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is- 1. The friction-bands G, in conjunction with the pawls F, the rod heretofore described, and the cylinder B, when operating'substautially as and for thep'urposes setfforth. I v
2. The dogs H, rod I, and counterpoise J, when arranged and operating substantially as herein described. 3. The combination and arrangement of the above-mentioned 'parts'with the 'frame A, the cylinder B, the
,sockets C, the handles or levers D, the ratchets E, and the chain or rope K, when constructed and operating substantially as herein specified, set forth, and described.
