WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at T- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a device for holding open the mouth of a bag or sack; and its object is to furnish a device of the character referred to which may be constructed entirely of heavy wire and which may be within certain limits adjustably expanded or contracted, as may be required to fit the mouth of bags of various sizes.

I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device Fig. 2, a part of the same, showing the fastening device in position to receive the bag; Fig. 3, a sectional plan of the fastening mechanism with the bag placed ready to be gripped and fastened; Fig. 4, the same with the bag secured upon the holder; andFig. a transverse sectional elevation of the sliding block hereinafter referred to, together with its setscrew.

My bag-holder consists of a frame of heavy stiff wire. In the drawings, 1 is a hoop which is designed to be placed in the usual manner within the mouth of a bag to keep it open. The extremities of the wire which form the hoop 1 overlap each other, one of the extremities being formed as a hook or loop 2, which encircles and slides upon the opposing end of the wire. The other end of the wire 1 is rigidly engaged, as at 3, (see Fig. 5,) with a metal block 4. This block has a transverse hole through which passes loosely that end of the wire upon which the hook 2 is formed. In the block 4 is tapped a threaded hole for the reception of a set-screw 5, the inner end of which contacts with the sliding end of the wire. It will be seen that the end of the wire 1 upon which the hook 2 is formed slides in the block 4 and upon the other end of the wire, which is rigidly connected with the block. The resiliency of the hoop permits it to be contracted or enlarged, as may be desired, and by means of the setscrew 5 the two ends of the wire may be secured in any desired adjusted relation.

In the hoop 1 are two short curls 6, which are engaged by corresponding curls 7, formed at the extremities of aheavy wire half-hoop 8. The half-hoop 8 and the hoop 1 are secured in rigid relation by means of stout wire connecting-braces 9, as shown. The part 8 has a loop 10 midway of its length by which the holder may be suspended from a suitable hook while the bag is being filled. Hoop 1 and the part 8 are provided with correspond- .ing loops 1 1., which receive the two ends of an open V-shaped swivel 12, which rotates horizontally between the pieces 1 and 8. The swivel 12 is provided with a handle or lever 13 by means of which the swivel may be given a half-turn either to the right or left. The projecting end 14 of one of the braces 9 is bent to form a catch which holds the lever 13 in place after'the bag is gripped by the holder.

The operation of my device is as follows: Hoop 1, having been adjusted as above described to accommodate the mouth of the bag to be held, is placed within the mouth of the bag. The lever 13 is thrown to the right, as shown in Fig. 2. The bag is drawn tightly around the hoop, and the slack of the mouth of the bag is gathered by the hand into a single bight or fold 15, which is drawn in through the opening in the swivel, as shown in Fig. 3. The handle or lever 13 is now given a halfturn to the left and is locked. in place by slipping or springing it under the hook 14, the swivel in its half-turn catching and holding the fold or bight tightly between the bag and one of the arms of the swivel 12, as shown in Fig. 4. The bag is thus stretched tightly around the hoop and is held open and prevented from slipping off until the lever 13 is released.
