Be it known that we, CHARLES STODDARD and Arms STODDARD, of Naples, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, as indicated by the line a: y of fig. 2.

Figure 2 is a view of the under side of our improved device.

Like letters inboth figures on the drawings indicate like parts.

Our invention relates to a method of removing from a kitchen or other place the steam and odors generated upon the stove during the process of cooking, or boiling unclean clothing, and may be denominated a kitchenventilator.

It consists of attaching a sleeve to the stove-pipe, a very small pipe projecting horizontally therefrom; the said pipe having attached thereto a large inverted metallic dish, into which the outward orifice of the small pipe opens, for the purpose of conveying therefrom into the stove-pipe the odors and steamarising from the stove as aforesaid; the said sleeve resting on a shoulder formed in the stove-pipe, and fitting sufficiently loose around the pipe to admit of its being turned so as to close the holetherein, when it is not desired to use the ventilator.

To enable any skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation. v

A represents ajoint of stove-pipe, over which there is slid a sleeve, a, fitting down on a shoulder, 6, made in the stove-pipe, and having attached thereto and projecting therefrom horizontally a small pipe, B, with its orifice c adjusted to that in the side of the stove-pipe. C represents an inverted dish-shaped receptacle, of a size suitably adapted to catching the odor and steam arising from the stove; it having a small pipe, D, attached thereto, and opening into the concave portion thereof, which smallpipe forms a part of the ventilator-pipe, and slides into that portion of the same which is rigidly attached to the stove-pipe. E represents a damper, located in the stove-pipe, which is regulated by the thumb-piece cl on the outside of the pipe, and which damper is a metallic semi-disk, adapted to cutting off only one-half of the draught of the pipe, by the adjustment of the thumb-piece, as aforesaid.

It will be observed that the metallic dish may he slipped off at pleasure from the short pipe, and the said pipe turned around to the hack of the stove-pipe when not in use, so that it may cover thehole thereof.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
