Sipecication of Letters Patent,
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed August 14, 1905. Serial Noi 274,149.
.To all whom, it may concern/.-
Beit known that LALMERON F. WHEATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menlo, in the county of Pacificand State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snatch-Blocks; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malre and use the vided whereby the wear on the pulley-wheel will be reduced to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of one side of the block. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side. F ig. 3 is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1. ,Y Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the frame ofthe block, said y frame consisting of tapering -parallel side lates 2 and 3, connected together at their ower ends by an integral cross-bar or plate 4. The side plates 2 and 3 are preferably formed with a beaded or reinforced edge 5,
and the plate 2 is integrally formed or otherwise secured to a reinforcing-plate 6. The side .plateA 3 is provided with a reinforcingplat 7.
Arranged in the side and reinforcing plates is a central transversely-disposed pivot bolt or pin 8, which is preferably formed of comparatively soft metal and is incased in a band or sleeve 10 of hard metal, the length of the band or sleeve 10 being such that the ends of the same will engage the inner Walls of the Side plates 2 and 3, thereby holding said A plates properly spaced .apartA to permit the grooved pulley-wheel '9 to freelyrevolve on said band or sleeve, said' plates, together with the pivot-bolt 8, lirmly bracingsaid side plates and the frame of the pulley, as well vas preventing the wearing of the bolt or pin 8.
The reinforcing-plate 6 on the side plate is l' i provided with laterally-projecting parallel apertured lugs 12, between which is pivotally mounted a right-angular supporting-bail 13.
duced lug 14, on the inner side of which is formed an inwardly-projecting extension 1 5, the inner face of which is beveled or inclined,
as shown at 16, and is adapted to engagea similarly beveled or inclined surface formed j, i on the outer end of the reinforcing-plate 7vof the side plate 3, whereby when said extension of the lug 14 is in engagement with the beveled surface of the plate 74 the upper ends of the side plates 2 and 3 will be securely braced and prevented from spreading.
On the reinforcing-plate 7 of the side plate 3 is formed a laterally-projectin apertured lug or ear 17, on which 1s ivotalIy mounted a bail-shaped latch 18, sai latch being adapted to be swung into engagement with the outer edge of the lug 14, thereby locking the i same into engagement with the side plate 3, as hereinbefore described. vThe pivot-pin 19 of the latch 18 is provided on one end with an offset or cam lug 20, which is ada ted to be engaged by a flat s ring 21, secure to the side 3 of the block. he tension of the spring 21 is exerted upon the cam-lug 20 to normally hold the latch 18 in position to be engaged by the lug 14', with which said latch will be automatically engaged when the bail 13 is swung to a closed position over the end of the block, thereby automatically securing said supporting-bail into closed position. In the upper right-angularly-bent portion of the bail '13 is swiveled an eyebolt 22, With which'is coni nected a link 23, and to said link is connected a supporting-hook 24, by which the block isconnected to a suitable anchora e.
From the fore oing description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the inven-.
tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended ex lana'tion.
`On the free end of the bail 13 is formed a re- Various changes in the orm, prpO-ton' IOO IIO
` together at their lower ends, a grooved pullley journaled in said (plates, reinforcing-(plates arranged on said-si e plates, aperture parallel bearing-lugs formed on one of the latter, a rightangularly -formed suplporting bail pivotally mounted in said paral el lugs, a lug formed on the end of said bail, said lug having an inwardly-proj ecting beveled extension adapted to engage a beveled surface on the reinforcing-plate of the opposite side plate,
an apertured lug formed on said latter reinforcin -plate, abail-shaped latch ivotally mounte on saidlug and ada ted to e swung into engagement with the ug on said supporting-bail to hold the samesclosed, and means to hold said latch against casual disengagement rom said lug, substantially as described.
2. A pulley-.block of the class described, consisting of parallel side plates connected toether at their lower endsfga grooved pulley Journaled in said plates, reinforcing-plates arranged on said side plates, apertured parallel bearing-lugs formed on'l one of said side lates, a right-angularly-formed supportingail ivotally mounted in said parallel lugs, a lug ormed on the end of said bail, said lug having an inwardly-projecting beveled ex-4 tension ada ted to engage a beveled surface on the rei orcing-plate of the opposite side plate, an apertured-lug formed on said latter` reinforcing-plate, a pivotin journaled in said aertured lu a bail-s aped latch fixed on sai pin and a apted to be swung into engagement with the lug on said sup ortingl, an offset lug formed on one en of said pin and a spring adapted to be en aged by said offset, whereby'said latch wil beheld against casual disengagement from the lug on said supporting-bail, substantially a's described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit'- ALMERON, F. WHEATON.
