CARSON DURKEE, OF VICKSBURG, MICHIGAN.
MOTOR-VEHICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed June 12, 1906. Serial No. 264,860.
To all whom it 12m concern:
Be it known that 1, (Mason DURKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motor-vehicles.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide in a motor-vehicle an improved driving-gear whereby the power is delivered to all of the carrying-wheels; second, to provide an improved motor-vehicle having these features which is comparatively simple and economical in structure and very strong and durable.
Further objects and objects relating to the structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. 0
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the-claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a motor-vehicle embodying the features of my invention, the body and motor not being shown. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional View of my improved motor-vehicle, taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View taken on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation View of'one of the coupling-bars H for the axles. Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 6 '6 of Fig. 2, showing the structural details of one of the clips H for the coupling-bars H. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 7 7 of Fig. 2, showing the connection for the steering-rod.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, I provide an axle-frame for both the front and rear axles.
These frames preferably consist of the longitudinal bars A and the cross-pieces or end blocks A, which are rigidly secured thereto. Axles C are provided for the wheels C. The axles C are arranged in suitable bearings in the axle-sleeves B. The wheels are fixed to the axles. The axle-sleeves are pivotally secured to the frames by the pivots B", which are vertically arranged through the end pieces A. (See Fig. 3.) The front and rear axle-frames are connected by a reach a. and by the side bars a. The side bars a are pivotally secured to the frames and serve, in connection with the reach, to hold them in proper relation to each other. On the inner ends of the axle-sleeves B are rollers 12. Yoke-like ways F are provided for these rollers. The ways F are secured on the under side of the axle-frames. This effectually supports the axles and allows the free' swinging thereof on the pivots B. The ways also serve as stops to limit the movement of the axles.
A beveled gear C is secured to each Wheel 0. Beveled gears c are arranged to mesh with these gears C. The gears c are journaled on the pivot-pins B" of the axles, so that no matter what the position of the wheels may be the gears C and c are always in mesh. A driving-shaft made up of sec tions D D is supported on suitable forwardlyprojecting brackets carried by the rear axleframe. The driving-sprocket M is connected to the driving-shaft sections by a suitable compensating-gear connection. The driving-shaft sections are provided with beveled pinions B, which are arranged to mesh with the main gear D of the compensating gear, through which power is delivered from the driving-shaft to the wheels. Shafts D, havthe gears c, are supported in suitable bearings on the axle-frames. The rear gears d of the compensating gears are fixed upon the rear shafts D, while the forward gears d are connected to the forward shafts D by the tumbling-rods E. The tumbling-rods are provided with suitable. universal couplings E. The main gear D' of the compensating gear is connected to the gears d by suitable pinions d arranged in the well-known manner. Withv the parts thus arranged the power is delivered to all four of the wheels C. With 1 ing pinions c thereon, arranged to mesh with 5 the compensating gears arranged inthe conover any obstruction without skidding the in a suitable bearing carried by the body J,
which is shown in conventional'form in the drawings. The rack .I is connected to one of the rear axles by'the link i. The diagonally opposite front and rear axles are" connected in pairs by the links h and sliding bars H. Each of the bars H is provided with a pair of laterally-projecting and oppositel projecting ears h. The links h are pivotall y secured at one end to the inwardly-projecting pins 6 on the inner ends of the axlesleeves and at the other end to the laterall projecting ears h of the connecting-bars fl The bars H are slidingly secured on the under side of the reach a by the clips H, as clearly appears in Figs. 1, 2, and 6 of the drawings. Thus arranged the axles of the diagonally opposite wheels are connected to secure the proper adjustment thereof in turning. To act upon the four wheels together, the forward axles are connected by means of the pivoted bar G and the links 9. The bar G is supported by the forwardly-projecting end of the reach a and the bracket G. The bar G is connected to the axle-sleeves by means of the links 9. I secure by this arrangement of parts a vehicle which is very responsive in steering and one which may be turned in a ver small area. As before remarked, the shi ting of the wheels in turning does not in any manner affect the driving-gear connections thereto.
By my improved driving-gear connections I am enabled to deliver power to all of the carrying-wheels, so that a maximum of traction-friction is secured for the wheels. By applying the power to all of the carryingwheels the maximum amount thereof is utilized in propelling the load.
By constructing the parts as I have illustrated and described they are largely interchangeable, so that the cost of manufacture is greatly reduced.
While I have illustrated and described my improved driving-gear in connection with a road-vehicle, I desire to remark thatit is applicable to motor-vehicles or other styles, as will be readily apparent.
I have illustrated and described In improved driving-gear for motor-vehicles 1n the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and strength. I am, however, aware that it is capable of very considerable variation without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent, is-
