m c? m C fig ANDREW. a mum 0a.. mmumoamwn NITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER! Specification of Letters Patent.
ratented May 15, 1906.
Application filed June 22, 1905. Serial No. 266,441.
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PEPPER CoUL- TER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching suspenders and drawers to trousers, the object being to provide a fastener to be used in place of the usual buttons, the device being so constructed that it may be easily and conveniently secured in position.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a suspenders and trousers fastening and drawers-support embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastening device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of reinforcing devices for the Suspender-ends, and Fig. 5 shows a supporter for drawers used in connection with the device.
The fastening comprises a metal plate 1, having an upward extension 2, forming a jaw member, coacting with which is a swinging jaw member 3. The swinging jaw member 3 has at its lower end a tongue 4, which extends through an opening 5 at the junction of the plate 1 and the extension 2, and the downwardly-turned end of this tongue is engaged by a spring-plate 6, which holds the jaw member 3 yieldingly against the jaw member 2. The jaw member 2 at its upper end has a hook 7 for engaging in the eye of the suspender-end or in the reinforcing device to be hereinafter described.
To permit the aw member 3 to engage practically against the member 2, the said jaw member 3 is provided with a chambered portion 8 for receiving the hook 7. The lower end of the plate 1 has an upwardly-extended flange 9 for receiving the pin members 10, turned inward from a body portion 11, consisting of wire, this device being designed to engage with the waistband of drawers to support the same. This supporting device is held from accidental detachment from the flange 9by means of akeeper-plate 12, hinged to the plate 1 and having at its lower edge an inwardly-extended flange portion 13, which passes over the flange 9. Thekeeper 12 has a finger-piece 14 at its center, and above this finger-piece is a tongue 15, which passes through an opening 16, formed in the plate 1, and an upwardly-extended portion of this tongue is engaged by a spring-plate 17, attached to the main plate 1.
In practice the whole device will be covered with cloth or similar material, and this cloth, as indicated at 18, is secured in a waistband 19 of the trousers.
In connection with the device and as before stated I employ reinforcing devices for the buttonholes of the suspenders. The reinforcing device consists of metal plates 20 21, the plate 20 being designed to engage against the rear side of the suspender-end, while the plate 21 engages the front side. These plates are provided with central open ings to receive the hook 7, and in the periphery of the plate 20 are notches 22, through which lugs 23 on the plate 21 pass, said lugs being turned downward against the inner side of the plate 20, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The plate 21 also has around its central opening lugs 24, which pass through the opening in the plate 20 and are turned downward against the inner side of the plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a plate, means for detachably connecting said plate to suspenders and a device for supporting drawers detachably connected to said plate.
2. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a plate, means for detachably connecting the same to suspenders, an upwardlyturned flange on the lower end of said plate, a pin member for removably engaging with said flange, and a keeper-plate mounted to swing on the main plate for holding said pin member in lace.
3. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a main late, means for detachably engaging said p ate with suspenders, an upwardly-turned flange on the lower end of said plate, a pin member for engaging the said 1 name to this specification in the pie'sence oi flange, a keeper-plate mounted to swing on two subscribing witnesses. the main plate, a tongue extended from said I keepenplate through the main plate, and a HENRY PEPPER COULTER' .5 spring engaging With said tongue at the inner Witnesses:
side of the main plate. ELBERTA ALEXANDER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my CLARENCE E. Fox.
