ISAAC O.- RUSSELL, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES T.
HORN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PHYSICAL EXEHCISING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 12, 1906. Serial No. 295,826.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC 0. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana olis, in the county of Marion and State of In iana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Physical Exercising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in physical exercising devices to be used for ullding up and strengthening the muscles and WhlCh may also be used as a toy.
The invention consists of a circular plate of wood having a handle extension, together forming a paddle. A ball, preferably a hollow rubber one, is connected by a rubber string with the outer end of the paddle. The
plate at this outer end is provided with a central opening circular in shape and slightly imfiller in dlameterthan the diameter of the The object of the invention is to provide a device for catching and holding the ball by drawin the latter artially through the hole, when t e return of the ball b the actionof the rubber is accurate enoug to deliver it properly to the hole. In devices of this character as heretofore made the hole has been large enough to allow the ball to pass freely 3o through, and it has been caught in a pocket at the back of the addle; but owing to the force with which t e ball enters the pocket the latter soon becomes torn and destroyed. "I have found that by making the hole approximately one-sixteenth of an inch less in diameter than the ball that the ball by skilful driving can be passed sufiiciently through the hole to be caught and retained in the paddle until expelled b a counter-pressure; and a further object o the invention, therefore, is
to cheapen the cost of manufacture of a physical exercising more durable. I
I accomplishthe objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fi ure 1 is an edge view of the paddle with a bal caught in the opening through the paddle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fi 3 is a front. viewof the paddle with the be removed from its opening.
device and render the same Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the rawin s. Q
4 is t e circular plate at the'end of the paddle, and 5 is the handle, which will preferably be made wide enough to receive inscriptions or printed matter in the way of directions or advertisements should the article be used as an advertising medium.
6 is an elastic ball, preferably a hollow rubber ball, and it is connected with the end 4 ofthe paddle by means of the rubber string 7. The circular plate 4 of the paddle has a central hole 8, slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the ball, the dotted lines circling around the hole 8 indicating the size of the ball. I
In using this device the operator gras s the handle5 with one hand, strikes the all a blow with the plate 4, driving it away from him in any desired direction, thereby bringing into play the different muscles of the bod in bending to keep in the direction of the ball. The ballwill be drawn back by the elasticity of the rubber string, and'if it strikes the hole 8 squarely from in front of the addle it will enter the hole and its walls wi I be compressed in the manner shown in Fig. 2, so as to require positive dislodgement by a pressure upon the ball from the rear of the paddle. Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a physical exercising device, a paddle, an elastic ball, an elastic string connecting the ball with the paddle, said paddle having a perforation shghtly les 1n diameter than t e diameter of the ball adapted to catch and hold the ball. i
2. In a physical exercising device, a paddle, a hollow rubber ball, a rubber string connecting the ball with the end of the paddle, said paddle having a hole sli htly less in di- 1afrfieter than .the ball to catcIi :and hold the In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indiana olis, Indiana, this 23d day of September, A. 1905.
