T0 a/ZZ 'wii/011p it 77m4/ con/087%:
Be it known that I, PETER Sol-IMIT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port I/Vashington, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof.
My invention refers to clothes-Washers, its object being to produce a washing-machine which will thoroughly cleanse by having a rocking motion imparted to the body of the same, thereby creating a current and forcing the water through and over the articles to be cleansed in a continuous flow, thus dispensing with rubbing or mechanical beaters or agitators and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be fully set forth hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently'claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical sectional view of my improved Washingmachine on line 1 1 of F ig. 2 with parts in full to better illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the machine on line 2 2 of F ig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail fragmental plan of a portion of a grating in said machine, this view being indicated by line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a cylindrical metal body, preferably galvanized, from the ends of which project central trunnions a, the latter being hung in slotted bearings b of standards B, which, together with a cross-brace c, forms the stationary frame of the machine. The body has a rectangular mouth C at the top, through which accessis had to the device for filling, &c., a slip cover or lid D being provided to close the same when in use, and a handle E is also attached to one of the walls of said body for actuating the latter.
To limit rotarymovement of the body in either direction, a pair of lugs d are riveted to one of the end walls thereof to oppose the adjacent standard B, and these lugs, coming against the said standard when the machine is in operation, will by their Sudden impact also serve to impart a greater Velocity to the water in the directions indicated by the arrows 1 1 in Fig. 1 of the drawings,,and consequently increase the rinsing eHiciency of the device.
A false bottom comprised of side plates E and a grating F is located below the center of the body A, said plates being preferably bolted to the end walls of the latter and eX- tending outward to a point near the edge of the cylindrical body, so as to form a slot The grating F is detachably connected to the plates E by means of ears eXtending inward from sa-id plates. These ears are perforated to receive downturned ends of the rods G, which form the cross-brace supports for the slats H of the grating. Extending inward from the cylindrical body portion of the body A and just above the plates E are a pair of deflector-strips I, and these defiectors serve to throw the water toward the center of the machine when the latter is in operation and over the clothes, as indicated by the arrows 2, and thus keep up a continuous circulation as the ,device is oscillated. Side strips J of the mouth C extend downward into the body A to. serve as deflectors, which will trap the water when in motion and prevent leakage at this point.
In operation the machine is partly filled with water and the clothes dropped in upon the false bottom, and when the cover is in position the device is oscillated. The motion causes the water to pass up through the grating and also through the slots f until it Strikes the deflectors, by which it is thrown forward, as previously described, and again forced down and through the articles to be washed, the direction of the water alternating with each movement of the cylindrical body A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a washing-machine, an oscillating body having a false bottom coinposed of a central grating and side plates, there being slots between the latter and the walls of said body, and deflectors extending inward from the aforesaid walls above the said plates.
2. In a washing-machine, an oscillating body having a false bottom composed of a de- IOO tachable central gratting and permanent side ngton, in the county of Ozaukee and State of plates, thell'le bng sot betxxeenfithe letter Wisconsin, in the presence of tWo Wtnesses.
and the wa s o said o y, an de ectors eX- tending nward from the aforesad walls PETER SCHMIT' 5 above the side plates. v l
i In testmony that I clam the foregoing I have'hereunto 'set my hand, at Port Wash- /Vtnesses t WM. AI-ILHAUSER, ELSA EGHART.
