'SECTIONAL RIM.
Patented Aug. '21, 1906.
Application filed October 9,1905. Serial No. 281,887-
To all whom it may concern".- I
Be'it known that I, WILLIAM G. MARE; a
siding atSpringfield, in the county of Hampgien and Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
have invented certain. new and useful 1111- rovements in Sectional Rims, of which the fbllowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rims for wheels for automobiles, 'cars, motorcycles, and vehicles, and comprises a secfor holding them in place tionalrim made in a suitable number of sections each attached in the center to the telly by certain resilient means and braced at the ends by ade uate supports, "all as hereinafter set'torth; an the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a sectional and detachable rim; second, to provide suitable means for connecting each rim section and the telly and third, to increase the resiliency of said rim. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure -1 shows said device in position on a section otthe rim of a wheel, and Fig. 2 a cross-section of the rim at line at m.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu hout the views.
.As betore intimated, my rim is made up of a considerable number of sections. These sections are detachably held in place and to the telly upon which said rim is mounted by means of a plurality of pistons, cylinders, springs, nuts, or heads and supports or their equivalents. A detailed description of these parts nnl be found below.
My rim is divided into sections a a, each having at the center of its concave side a pin,
iston, or rod (1", said pin, piston, or rod a eing adapted to fit into and extend through a cylinder or tube b and the telly c, the cylinder 7) being attached to the telly c.
8 represents a cover or cylinder, made of rubber or other suitable material, between the springs e a, designed to protect the rod 0- anddthe cylinder or socket b from dust and mu The end of the piston o which extends section a" into its normal position. The
sides of'the rim-section aa are constructed flange-shaped, thereby forming a groove in which the tire-sections g are fastened. The said flanges are supported in the center by a braceh, which runs laterally across the outer surface of the rim-section a and not only acts as a brace to the flanges, but also helps to hold the tire-sections g g in place.
f represents a support constructed at either. end with a lip or projection 11 and being provided at the center of its concave side with a" lug or projection Q The sides ot the supports f are constructed flange-shaped similar to those of the rim-sections a a and-engage the tiresections g g in a similar manner. The support is placed between the rim-sectionsa a, the lips i slidin ore-and supporting the adjacent surface of the rim-sections a a, and is held in place by means of a spring ft or its equivalent. The sprin Z is placed bet-ween the support f and the elly c and is held in place by the lugs and Z.
A space is left between the ends of the supports and the adjacent ends of the rim-seclZlOllS in order t0 HHOYV 0119 01 11101'6 rimsecports a part ofthe tire, the rim-sections being arranged alternately with supports, each sup- )ort having a spiral spring-and means for caring against the adjoining rim-sections 2. The combination with rim-sections each having a. piston and a telly provided with cylinders or tubes and spiral springs interposed between the telly and inner surface of the rim-sections, ot a series of supports arranged alternately with the rim-sections and having each a spiral spring and means for hearing against the rim-sections. I
3. The combination with a sectional rim comprising a series otrim-sections having each a piston or rod, of a series'ot supports placed alternately with the rim-sections, each support having projections upon its surface toward the rim-sections which bear, against the corresponding surfaces of the rim sections and being provided with lu s to hold springs in place and means to hold the tire upon the sections and supports, of a felly, vprovided With cylinders suitable to reends of said pistons s0 arranged as to prevent p eivesaid pis'tonstand having lugs or projecthe sections and supports fromvbeing forced tienscorres ending to the projections on the out of position.
