Everest, in the county of Brown and State of have lnvented new and useful Im- Kansas,
of which the folroveinents in Hens Nests, owing is a specification.
This invention relates object of the invention being to rovi sanitary hens nest embodying a p urality of compartments for the hens whereby the hens are separately housed and prevented from interfering with each other, the construction of the nest as a whole enabling the same to be easily and quickly cleaned to maintain the same in a sanitary condition.
A further object of the invention is to construct the nest as a whole out of sheet metal and to provide for using metal of very light gage by stiffening and bracing the same in a novel and efiective manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide for proper ventilation of the several compartments of the nest and for giving access to any or all of the compartments, also for locking the doors of the compartments in an expeditious and effective manner.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a multiplehens nest embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertieal longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section taken in line with one of the port-holes. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken in line with one of the keyhole-slots.
The hens nest contemplated in this invention is constructed of sheet metal throughout and embodies the topll, bottom 2, the front rail. or strip 3, and t e back rail or hangerstrip 4, also the ends 5 and the partitions 6, all of said parts as well as the several doors 7 being made of sheet metal of light gage and bein reinforced or stiffened in the manner hereinafter particularly described.
The nest as a whole is divided into a plurality of compartments 8, eachof the proper size to contain a hen, the said compartments being divided off and entirely separated from each other by means of the intervening partitions 6. Each partition is provided to hens nests, the 'de a along its top and bottom edges with projecting prongs 9, which are inserted through corresponding openings in the top and bottom of the coop and then bent over'and clenched against the outer sides of the top and bottom, as best shown in Fig. 1, thereby tying the top and bottom of the nest together. The ends 5 are secured to the top and bottom in the same manner, and, if desired, the extremities of the top and bottom 1 may be bent, as shown at 10, to form flanges which extend outside of tain the ends in place.
The back hanger strip or flange 4, which is integral with the top 1, extends the entire length of the multiple nest and is preferably secured by the same means which hold the top and bottom to the partitions, or, in other words, by means of prongs 10, extending from the partitions through openings in the strip 4, behind which shown in Fig. 3. The strip or flange 4 is provided at suitable intervals with keyhole-slots 11, adapting the nest as a whole to be hung upon nails or screws or like fasteners attached to a wall or vertical support 12, as shown in Fig. 5, the larger portions of the slots 11 enabling the hanger-strip 4 to be passed over the heads of the fasteners and then slid downward, as shown in Fig. 5,
the ends 5 and securely re-" they are clenched, as
which prevents the nest as a whole from be- 7 coming unhooked in a manner readily under stood. The an inturned stiffening-flange The front flange or strip 3 hanger-strip 4 is provided with 4'. extends the en tire length of the nest and is secured to the ends 5 and partitions 6 in the same manner as the top and bottom 1 and 2 and the h angerstrip 4. The strip or flange 3 extends only part way the height of the front of the nest and is provided with an inturned flange 13 along its upper edge which acts to reinforce or strengthen the same.
turned up to form a reinforcing or stiffening flange 14,
For a like purpose the forward edge of the top 1 is while the extremities of the strips 3 and 4.-
may be bent inward to form retaining-flanges 15 for the ends, the flanges 10 and 15 also serving to stiffen and reinforce the portions of the nest ofwhich they form parts.
The partitions 6 and also the ends 5 are extended at the front to form projecting jambs 16, and between said jambs are mounted doors 17. Each door has its top and bottom edges bent outward to form stiffeningflanges 18, and the side edges thereof are bent outward to form braces 19, which also constitute stiffening-flanges for the door. their inner lower corners the braces 19 are pivotally connected at 20 to the projecting jambs 16, thus providing a hinged connection for each door.
Each door is provided with a ort-hole 21 and is further provided aroun said porthole with an annular reinforcing rib or corrugation 22, which materially stifiens and reinforces the door. When the doors are swung outward or thrown open, as shown at Figs. 1 and 5, the braces 19 bear a ainst the front rail or strip 3 and hold the doors in a horizontal position, thus forming a projecting table or leaf. The port-holes 21 allow the hens to stick their heads out through the doors to obtain a supply of fresh air in hot Weather.
Lock-pins 23 are removably fitted in holes in the to of the nest, the lower ends of which extend ownward in front of the doors and hold the same closed. To open the doors, these pins 23 are removed.
In order to clean the nest, the latter may be u'nhooked from the fasteners which secure the same to the wall or other support and placed upon the ground with the back ofthe nest downward, and on account of the back of the coop being open the straw or ha or other material contained in the nest will be allowed to escape. The coop may also be easily flushed with water and thoroughly cleansed, and bein composed of sheet metal throughout it will prevent vermin from breeding in or about the compartments of the nest. 4
I claim- 1. A nest for the purpose described composed of sheet metal throughout and embodying continuous top and bottom sections, end pieces, and partitions dividing the nest as a whole into com artments, the top and bottom sections eacli having a flange, one extending partially over the front and the other flange extending partially over the back of the nest and acting to brace the structure.
2. A nest for the purpose described, comprising continuous top and bottom sheet- I Atv fsagnsi which serve to sup ort them in a substan tially horizontal position when open.
3. A sheet-metal nestfor the purpose de scribed comprising continuous top and bot tom sections, end pieces'and partitions di vi'ding the-nest into a plurality of compartments, the artitions havingforwardlyrprojecting jam s, a front section or strip extending thefull' length of the nest across the bottom portions of the compartments, and.
doors operating between the jambs. an'dpivotally connected a 'their'bottom e'd es to the jambs, substan tially as described.
4. 'A sheet-metal nest for the purpose described embodying continuous'top and bottom sections, end ing the nests into a plurality of compartments, hinged doors arranged at the front of the nest, and a hanger-strip extending lengthwise of'the upper ortion of the back of'the nest and provided with'keyhole-slots, substantiall as'and for the purpose described. 3
5. 'A sheet-metal nest for the purpose described comprising continuous'top and bottom sections, end pieces and partitions dividing'the nest into a, plurality of compartments, a front strip extending the full length .of the nest alon the bottoms of the compartments, hinged oors closing thefronts of the compartments, and a'han er-strip extending lengthwise of the back of% upper portions of the compartments, the
rojecting j acent to pieces and partitions divid he nest across the compartments'being otherwise open at the back, substantial liyl as described.
