Description
H. H SEELEY.
rain Winnower.
No. 82,558. Y Patented Sept. 29, 1868;
FIEIIGE.
H. H. SEELEY, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FANNlNG-MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,558, dated September 29, 1868.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, H. H. SEELEY, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Fans; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the depressed form' of the wings of the fan, in connection with the same form in the wind-board, giving greater power of the air with less motion and smaller drum; and also in that the lower screen is pivoted, allowing it to be adjusted to the kind and condition of the grain; and, further, that the toll-board is made adjustable and can be raised or lowered at pleasure, so that the mill works in accordance with the quality of the grain and saves the necessity of extra screens.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side sectional view, Fig. 2 a perspective view, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the fan.
A represents the body or frame of the mill, which is made of suitable material and dimensions. B is the drum, in the front end of the frame A, through the center of which drum is a shaft, a, which has its hearings in thesides of said frame, and is on one end provided with a small pinion, I), which works into the cogwheel 0, which latter is turned by means of a crank, (I, on the same.
The shaft a is provided inside of the drum with arms 0 e, which support the wings D D. These wings are formed of two pieces, secured to the arms a e, and incline downward toward the center, where they are joined together, so that the ends of each wing are higher than its center. The wind-board E, in rear of the fan thus formedfls shaped exactly the reverse, it
also being made of two pieces, secured to the sides of the frame, but extending upward toward the center, so that its ends are lower than the center.
The shoe F is hung inside of the frame A by means of metal bands ff on each side thereof, and consists of an upper screen, G, and a lower screen, H, which latter is pivoted in the sides of the said shoe. By this means the screenH can be adjusted to any kind or condition of the grain.
The toll-board I, which performs the duty of both shoe-bottom and toll-board, is provided with slotted arms h h, which are attached to the sides of the frame A by means of screws t' through the slots therein. The upper end of said toll-board is hung by means of a cross-bar or rod, g, passing through staples on the same and in slots on the sides of the frame A, so that, by this arrangement, the toll-board, with a screen that may be supported by it, can be adjusted to suit the grain.
I am aware that the wings D D, as hereindescribed, are of themselves not new.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wind-board E, in combination with the wings I) I), when constructed in a reverse manner from each other, all as herein shown and specified.
c 2. The adjustable screen H, pivoted in the sides of the shoe F, for the purpose of changing the same to suit any kind of grain, substantially as and for the purposes herein set' forth.
3. The adjustable toll board I, constructed as described, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of June, 1868.
H. H. SEELEY. W'itnesses:
L. It. PEIRsoN, P. SHUMWAY.
