construction. of use of the device. other manner of use of t e device. shows a. modification.
In the eccompanyin drawings the refining device is denoted in enerel et A and is formed up into the desired shepe from suitable materiel, such es core-sand. In one side of the block there is formed a. recess B. From this recess numerous openings C extend throughthe block to its opposite side.
One method of use of'my device is illustreted in Fig. 2, where it is shown es plecedl in the cope et the joint of the flask. The cope D is recessed on its under side to form a, chamber E, into which the s rue F leads. A te G is cut in the nowel D from under the ase of the chamber E end leeds to the ma.-
on the news1 with the recess B own end overlying the gate G. In use the metsl isf poured into the spree end passes to the upper' part I of the chamber E, where it boils and whirls, (es molten metal always will,) cens-VY ing the dross and slag, which are lighter than the metal, to rise to the top. The partlypuried motel strains down through the openings C of m refining device, preventing the passage of t e larger articles of impurities, thence into therecess where it again boils, throwing u such drossend sieg es hes not been aire 'y seperated, the purified metal passing from here through the gate G to the matrix H.
The device muy also be used as shown in Fig. 3. Here a. print similar in shape to that used in Fig. 2 1s reversed in, position and packed into the top cttiiecope to form the chsinber E', from the bottoni of which the spru'e lends to the gute und matrix. Mv device is located in the upper part of' this chemiicr with the recess uppermost. The metal is poured directl)T into the recess, where it boils and then strains through the holes to the lower part Ez oi the chamber, where it boils again, end from there passes through the sprue to the gate and matrix. Instead of c embering out the upper port of the cope my device may lie directly on top of the cope over the sprue, the co e being sore ed out by the molder for e smell) eres m'oun the sprue to direct the metal to the sprue after it passes from the recess through the holes in my reiin ing device. Y
The dross sud slag es it is whirled to the top or outer side of the mass of metal because ofthe boiling clings to the wells of the cheni- Y ber whenever it touches. In order tocollect as much as possible of this dross und slag, it is desirable in some ceses to flute the inner surface of the recess in my refining device, es nidiceted et K in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with u sand mold of a sldmming-getc comprising a. block of suitable materiel having a. recess in one side thereof, and a. plurality of passages extending from seid recess through said block to the opposite side, substantially as described.
2. The combination with aV send mold hsv ing connected recesses and s shoulder between them, of a. skimming-gate located in Vthe larger recess and against seid shoulder, Vseid gate comprising s block of suitsble rnsf ter-isi having s. recess in one side thereof, s
