Description

J.M. WILLBUR. MAGHINEFOR FORMING STEREOTYPE PLATES.
No. 82,463. Patented Sept. 22. 1868 fiuiml finder am am.
J. WILLBUR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, 17mm Patent No. 82,463, dated September 22,1868 wntedatczl s mba 16, 1868.
DEPROVENIENT IN MACHINE FOR FORMING- STEREOTYPE PLA'IES.
1'he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, J. M. WILLBUR, of Cleveland, county of Guyah'oga, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Machine for Forming Cylindrical Stereotype and other Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
forming stereotype or other plates of metalzinto curved or cylindrical form. c
The construction andanangement of my machine'are as follows, and consist of a bed-piece, A, of suitable size, and may be made of suitable material, upon two opposite sides of which are two upright parts, B B, which form the supports and contain. the boxes for thehjour nals of the rollerG. Upon the top of the uprights B B are fixed the caps b1) bi meausof the pins e, e, and 0 The pins 0 may be withdrawn and the caps turnedup, so that the roller Q'may be taken out when desired. The roller 0 has a milled or file-cut surface, the object of which is to prevent the slipping of the plates while the roller is being turned in the process of bendi g the plates: r l. v
D is an apron .or' flap, of sheet-iron or 'other suitable material, attached to. th'e roller 0; the roller 0 being divided into halves and secured together by the screws d (I, the. edge of the apron D being clamped between the two halves of the roller 0.
E is an adjustable sliding bed, provided with bevelled guides, ff, on the under side.. -Upon the end next to .the roller 0, the sliding bed-E has an upright part, g,
the surface next to the roller being concave, and-sulfioiently larger than the roller to allow space for the passage of the apron D and plate to be bent upon the roller;
and is attached to the sliding bed E for the purpose of adjusting it in relation to'the roller 0, and adapting the spacebctweenthem to the thickness of the plates to be bent.
L is a crank upon the roller C, by which it is-turned,
The'operation of this machine is as follows: Upon the apron D, which lies upon the bed E, there is put one or more thicknesses of thick paper, leather,
' or other suitable material, to protect the ot'the type from beingbruise'd. Then a plate, similar to the one seen at fig. 5, is laidupon the paper, face downward;
-then, by turning the crank L, the roller carries the apron and the'plate to be bent aromid and between it and the upright, g, and perfectly forms the plate around the roller, like that seen at fig. 4. By this means the surface of the type is made to conform to the curvature as well as the thinner parts.
be bent in this manner, either for small or large print-Y ing-cylinders, andmaking the printing-face of the type Plates of any size may conform perfectly to the curvature, whether they be single type, or large cuts,.or whole pages of readingmatter. It is well adapted, also, to the forming of sheets ofmetal of any kind in cylindrical forms for' I manufacturingimposes I claim- 1. The roller 0, having a milled or file-cut circumferential surface, for the purpose described, in combi nation with the apron D, arranged and operating as and for the purpose set forth..
2. The sliding bed E, having ahead or upright, g,
with its curved surface and the adjusting set-screw H,
in combination with the rollerIO and apron D, all constructed and operating as described. and for the purpose set forth,
J. M. 'WlLLBUR.
Witnesses Giro. Hns'rEB, Geo. W. Tnsnrrs.
H is a thumb set-screw,playing in the standard a,
